Bottom line ... the pre-outs only pass their dedicated signal (FL --> FL, FR --> FR) and nothing more regardless of whether you have a 2.1 or 5.1 setup.

You can do a reset by first powering off the AVR and then pressing/holding the UP/DOWN arrows on the front panel while powering on the AVR; however, more than likely you'll need to either repair it...
