Admittedly, my drive was pulled from a Linux desktop so I wiped it prior to inserting it in the TViX. Although I will say the last 10 drives or so I've purchased had no partitioning or filesystems...

I'm using a 7200 RPM WD "blue" 500GB drive with no problems. It does fill up, so I'd go with a 1TB or more.

IMO, the main reason to go with 5400 RPM drives is heat and to a lesser extent noise.
