It's an Onkyo thing. Mine does it from time to time too. I know some older units did it constantly and Onkyo fixed most through a firmware update.

Looks like a settings issue. Make sure either Video 1 or 2 is set to composite. When using the component setting you'll get a black and white picture.

The back surround speaker channels are...

The back surround speaker channels are re-assignable for bi-amping (page 17 of user manual). You could connect one set of speakers to the Front L/R posts and the other set to Surround Back L/R posts.
