I have zero experience with that suspension method, is that single or double layer of drywall that you have on the ceiling. I think you are going to need to test it to be sure.

correct no tape and mud on the first layer, you can use longer screws for screwing to studs, they will be a different type anyway. Course thread for wood, fine thread for steel channel.

Do some more reading on left and right speaker placement behind a wall to wall screen, it is not halfway from the center to the wall. Visit the Dolby labs website and look at their 7.1 speaker layout.
