'Lightning bolt' streaks?

I have the Ultra and was wondering if anyone has encountered this issue. While watching House of Cards in 4K, we'd see periodic red streaks that almost resembled lightning bolts through the picture....

Fair enough. I'd agree, as I've said before, that the Sony does do better in this category. The only thing I'm unclear about is whether there's some price to be paid for this suppression of false...

John, I'd bet part of this is based on the simple fact that LG sells a lot more of their models than the A1Es (Bs, Cs, Gs etc). With more sold, there's more of an opportunity for some poorer ones to...

John, a question on your comments that I bolded out. If you're saying that most C7s and A1s are relatively free of content apparent banding, but then say the A1s seem 'cleaner' than the C7s in terms...

Don't have it. I can only tell you that when I see banding on my B6, I see it in precisely the same place on a broadcast and to the same degree, on my Sony 940c. That much I know for sure. I guess my...

Having owned and shot with both cameras, yes. Certainly not dramatically sharper, but enough for me to see some added resolution in the GH5. Certainly not softer than the G85/G80. Remember that many...

Without the activation of the feature, it's no better than any other TV. There's no difference in false contouring between my 940c and B6 OLED. None. If you're seeing something different on the A1E,...

Did you understand what he said? He's not denying that smooth gradation doesn't work, but he IS saying that the feature must be enabled on the TV for it to work. If you don't turn it on, then it will...

Mark, I don't see much change in the sunlight. It still looks decidedly cool on either my calibrated monitor or OLED TV.

With that said, as you well know, color is a subjective thing and if you...

Nope, no crop in any 4K mode. It's one of the highly publicized features of the camera, and as an owner, I would have noticed any crop.

I'm assuming you know the GH5 also does 4K30p, 10bit 4:2:2...

If the false contouring were frequent and common with better content, I'd feel more strongly about this. However I rarely see it on BluRay or UHD BluRay. Rarely. It's more common in bit-starved...

OK, I'll bite. Explain to me how that video 'adequately explained' magic dust? I must have missed that part. I know it seems Vincent likes the Panasonic OLED the best, but nowhere did I find him...

Joe, that's a nice lens, but as is true with most constant aperture lenses, it's a bit on the heavy side for micro 4/3rds.

Yeah, not sure, but I suspect it loses its speed advantage quickly, once you start zooming. The weight of both are about the same, so that's good. It's not like one of the heavy FF lenses.

So John, are you saying that upon detecting HDR10, the Sony does go into the proper tone mapping algorithm without user intervention?

John, the question is why doesn't the Sony automatically kick into a more proper picture mode to more accurately tone map? Most owners will never understand the highlight detail that's missing and...

I think most of us fully understood the point of the video. However, whether or not it was designed to be a comparison review, it turned out that way, if only as a sidebar to its real intent. He...

I couldn't agree more. I watched it as he clearly showed the tone mapping on the Sony was discarding information in the brighter areas of the HDR10 picture that the LG & Panasonic weren't. However he...

It seems that some companies do hold on to their 'signature colors' longer than others. I well remember the days of Hi8. Back then, Sony's color was very different, warm & lush. But yes, nothing is...

And I think that's the main takeaway. We've reached a level of performance with OLEDs, that aside from features and styling, very little differentiates any of them in terms of PQ. For the most part,...
