It has to be a defective SSD. I have a carpc in my car... :) which is parked outside (not even in a garage), and in these New England winters, the temperature can easily drop into the single digits...

It should work as SAS is backwards compatible with SATA. No special cable needed either.

However, looking at your error(s), it almost feels like either there's a BIOS setting that's not configured...

Mine's a VM under ESXi as well. And at last count, it had been up for something like 8 months with no downtime. :) (And that's because I had to reboot the server then due to a backplane replacement.)...
