Severe compression, but done with some decent equipment properly configured. On my Comcast DVR, WLS 7.1's live buffering can be upwards of 50 minutes. In comparison, WBBM 2.1 is about 18-20 minutes.

It's possible it may have been a different version of the disk. What I had was through Netflix, and I'm pretty sure it was a labeled 'rental' disk. It was also shortly after it came out.
The media...

I tend to notice the reverse. Most allow a skip, but a few require FF (for each entry.). Some will let you use one of the MENU buttons to skip over them. A few rare ones don't allow anything.

And...

Did a quick look. Stretch-O-Vision on what I was watching, probably an older 4:3 SD show.

On my Comcast DVR, it does highly vary from channel to channel. WBBM is the highest, nearly 8-9%. WLS 7.1 is the worst, although WTTW is probably about the same now.

I can tell it's much more compressed. On my Comcast DVR, a recording is now barely 3%/hour of it's tiny 120G drive. It used to be 4-5%.

Yes, it's 480i@16:9.

If I remember, WTTW-HD started at 1080i, ran 720p for awhile, then went back to 1080i? I never watched Create or V-Me much, but Prime was surprisingly good for SD.

You can use a super-cheap CD. You don't need a DVD. I assume you could re-use it (or another old CD-R) if it's not a closed session.

It doesn't have to be an outdoor antenna, but it needs to support the long wavelengths of VHF-Lo. Most indoor antenna's without the big dipoles (rabbit ears) will have problems.
