I thought putting the support bar across the bottom would be enough but I'll try the diagonal supports as well (they're called knee braces?)

Yeah - the only problem is I was planning on leaving it open - I was using djhamp's bar as a model (attached). I'll throw some more supports on there and we'll see.

What did you use to seal the top? I'm in Redwood country and a local lumber yard has slabs like that I've been considering for the bar top.
