I think that were one of the things they improved...

I think that were one of the things they improved in season 2. They avoided creating drama because of Bruce being a schmuck. Now he is just closer to fish out of the water.

Yes some characters needs the unknown factor to work. Take how bad it worked in POTC4 when they moved up Jack Sparrow to lead/hero for that movie. He lost his edge.
