I believe to use the SC-85 in pre-amp mode one just needs to cycle the speaker button until the speakers are off and use the "Preout" connections.

You have to use the separate speaker connections. If you use banana plugs it could be a quick task but that would depend on the access to the rear of you AVR.

While not ideal, you could do what you suggest by connecting the speakers to the Top Middle or Surround Back speaker posts and changing the speaker configurations to match the connections.
