Ply is heaps better, its more resilient in many respects (although damping not quite as good apparently) - dont worry about the warping, with adhesive and screws it'll flatten out

Can't comment about the US. But here timber floors of any description are massively more expensive compared to carpet - say 4-6x more. I recall looking at the characteristics of carpet a few years...
