It's easy to allow arbitrary frame rates if you don't care about quality. You get tearing if the frame rate is not in sync with the display. It's watchable, but not great. Nobody would use it. It's...

Every player will be able to play every type of disk, right? So there needs to be some technical reason why a player capable of playing a 100GB at high bit rate would not be able to play a 66GB at...

Ok. Another possibility is that the high bit rate 100GB format is actually 2 layers, not 3.

The only way I can think of that adding a layer would boost the bitrate is if the movie were restricted...

That doesn't sound right. 66/100 should have the same max bitrate, since the per-layer density is the same. Maybe the lower speed is for 50GB disks?

That's cool. Instead of sampling a mass produced record, they are sampling from a metal master (or several) created for the sole purpose of sampling. So you get a "exactly like vinyl, only better"...

Only if the blu-ray is meant to be viewed that way. An example might be a display test disk. Upscaling could foil the intent of the disk author. But a movie? A movie is not supposed to have a pixel...

You can leave out the "seems". It is more accurate. The goal isn't to reproduce a grid of pixels, it's to reproduce the image represented by a grid of pixels. You're not supposed to see the grid.

Shot, or a film scan. You want to have more resolution in the master than the delivery format. That gives you an image without aliasing (or less aliasing anyway), which upscales nicely.
