Because that was exactly what Dolby intended. The media playback source was always meant to pass the TrueHD signal and the receiver/processor was to identify whether it contains Atmos information.

I use low day-to-day on all sources. It is minimal enough to not be distracting, but brings back some of the sharpness I feel like the TV is missing and should have.

That is most likely true. I knew that going in and am prepared to upgrade again next year or 2016 depending on 4K BD rollout. The SR-7009 is a stop-gap for me. Plan accordingly.

I am actually using Gallo Acoustics Nucleus Micros that I ceiling mounted. Works great. As for in-ceiling speakers, I believe the only real requirement is that they be wide dispersion.
