Not a fair comparison as these are totally different levels of audio quality and features as the VSX44 (MSRP $500) is a lower level model and the X4000 (MSRP $1299) is an upper mid-level model.

Although the X5200W uses similar amps as does the 4520CI, both the 4520CI and soon to be released X7200W have better quality components/DACs and will likely have better audio quality as a result.

Generally a minimum of at least 3-4" of clearance on top is recommended, so you should be fine here. I like the dual pane glass idea as that allows more air to circulate from the bottom as well. :)

I would imagine that most owners have tried this test when they first set up the AVR and in virtually every instance reported in this forum, the response is MUCH more favorable with Audyssey enabled.
