The units are not too hard to use at all. Usually just plug it in and away you go unless you have one that has some controls for brightness/contrast/sharpness etc.

Ok yeah doubt you will find those on DVD then. on Australian ebay there is often some fairly decent used VCR's if you look at JVC and Panasonic models and they will handle both PAL and NTSC tapes...
