I use a cheap ebay buy (~$10) to convert a vga output from my laptop. It has a usb audio "dongle" to add on 2 channel sound. Works well, no hum. I suspect you have some wiring issues.

I use the "metal tape" they have for AC ducting (and such) to "improve" the "dying" contacts. It works well as the adhesive is "industrial strength".
