Wow - one successful zoom (out)!

Minimizing the usefulness of zooming and claiming you don't mind the ugliness of focus breathing is not advancing information. And neither is providing a flawed test of zooming to try to make the...

The point of this thread is NOT to not zoom (or focus pull). It is that you cannot zoom with PZ lenses made for still cameras - they lose focus. And focus pulls have a problem too.

Zooming is used...

The point of this thread is that the power zoom lenses for hybrid cameras, what few there are, cannot be used for zooming while shooting because they lose focus. This includes all the Panasonic PZ...

"Lab" Tests

Here are tests in my "lab", showing the lens' zoom capabilities on the A7s ii - slow zooms, fast zooms, medium zooms, very slow zooms using the servo, using the remote, and manually using the ring,...

The second cheaper APS-C one is not parfocal and does not have real manual focus (just by wire), so no repeatable stops.

Power zooms are not necessarily parfocal zooms (like the ones on Rx10 ii...

What is Being Missed: Real Power Zooming and Focus Pulling

No doubt about it - the trend has been to turn still cameras into video cameras. But something was forgotten: servo zooming and focus pulling, pillars of video. The fact is that (almost) none of the...

Chris, I noticed a zoom in your otter video that was quiet nice; is the HCX-1000 zoom parfocal? What is your experience with the RX10 with respect to zooming and holding focus?

One major advantage of mirrorless cameras is that you can easily use lenses from Nikon and Canon on them with adaptors. You can still use this Nikkor lens on your GX8! Just get a cheap adaptor -...

Once in focus and stabilized, the shots from the lens look pretty good. One can see the "donut-holes" in the oof backgrounds that such lenses produce.

Yes, that camera is underappreciated, especially among those who seek long telephoto shots as part of their video needs. If only it had a parfocal zoom, a topic I will soon initiate.

Or only a 333mm lens for an APS-C IBIS camera like the A6500. But I don't know of any 250 or 333mm mirror lenses. However, you would get 1000m (!) on an MFT and 750mm on an APS-C with the lens above...

Absolutely, but now with IBIS becoming more common, this is less of an issue. I don't think a regular 500mm lens exists with OIS, and even if it did have it, I doubt anyone would try to handhold it!...

Cheapskate Light and Small $109 500mm Lens

The biggest drawback of a big telephoto lens is that it is - well, big, and heavy. You are going to not take the lens in many instances - on hikes etc. because it is too bulky. But then you will...

I agree with you that the offering of 4K60p is great. I even think that H265 is not a big issue in the sense of being a deal breaker. But, Panasonic is right now deciding on what to offer in the GH5...

It is fine to be optimistic about the GH5 improvements; they are using a better processor than in the GH4 for sure.

However, I do not see any rationale for Panasonic not supporting the offering...

The GH4 Shoots all-intra at 200 Mbps Now

And it is universally considered to be inferior to the 100 Mbps long GOP *in practice,* not just in theory. I am not optimistic that 400 Mbps all-intra will be any better at 4K60p than the 150 Mbps...

Wide and narrow DOF Choice is the Number One Plus of Full Frame

I think we all agree on many if not all points. Absolutely, if you choose to shoot with narrow DOF you are asking for trouble with regard to autofocus. But, this is not quite accurate:

"And of...
