The TI chip is just one failure. Onkyo chose to use cheaper capacitors in the SR606 which died in the heat. Their receivers in recent years have been failing for various reasons.

None of my nearly twenty combo discs has failed. Every one that has failed was a straight HD-DVD disc.

Most if not all of the combos I own are Universal releases which don't appear to be rotting.

AC3 supports 5.1 audio but doesn't require it. AC3 could be 2.0 audio instead.

Two other rare AC3 formats that are also supported are 1.0 (mono) and 2.1 (stereo with low frequency channel).
