Take an instrument that measures with a precision of 0.01 cd/m2 (and can read down to 0.01 cd/m2).

Now take a grating that has alternating lines, with respective luminances of exactly 0.003 cd/m2...

Zoyd/Graeme/anyone else,

I'm trying an interesting experiment with gratings to see if I can infer luminance levels below that of the instrument's range (i1d3). The approach is as follows:

take...

Not sure, I'm sure there are probably some test patterns out there. Maybe best to just choose some reference material and use your eye as the judge. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

WinDAS White Point Balance guide for Sony Trinitron CRTs

Just posted this over at the hardforum. Probably not relevant for 99% of users here, but figured it couldn't hurt to post. The introduction may be useful to read for those who want a better...

Michael,

What are your thoughts on the idea that setting contrast too high can create banding, due to the 8 bit color depth.

Suppose that you have a display that can run at 300 nits without...

yep, I appreciate that - being able to detect the boundaries of healthy vs tumorous tissue is more critical than smooth gradients.

I do wonder, though. With any given transfer function, let's say...

You'll be fine with HCFR - think of HCFR as a means to provide feedback on your calibration. As for instruments, someone else should answer - I only have experience with CRTs.
