Not sure what "can't get the TV to work" means, but the 391 does not feature HDMI(ARC), so if you are trying to pass the TV's smart app audio back to the 391, you must connect an optical cable...

It's not about just hearing it .... I'm in a small room and I can "hear" the dialogue of a DTV movie at -60db ... however, I prefer to listen at closer to movie reference ..... -10db. :)

When you have no dedicated sub, the FL/FR speakers will default to LARGE. When you add a sub, you can set them to SMALL/80Hz.
