What's the container type? With MKV you can embed the SRT file with mkvmerge and edit the header attributes with the same program to assign the language tag.

OPPO recently had some refurbs for $110 off (weren't they $489?). Since those come with the standard 30 day return and 2-year warranty, same as new, you'd have to get in under that.
