WHAT'S NEW IN THE xx13 MODELS?

For xx13 there aren't any earth shattering feature additions, rather there is a continued "trickle down" of features like front HDMI inputs, networking, etc. to the entry level models. Furthermore, we see the continuing push towards an "all HDMI" environment, as analog input support shrinks a little more and component video has disappeared completely below the 1913 model.  If you want to get some detailed analysis of a new xx13 model in use, read through my 2113ci review linked above.  This will give you a really good sense of how the unit operates and what practical changes have been made in the new xx13 models.

Like the past two years, the cheapest model (1513) is a "crippled" unit lacking many important features (spring clips instead of speaker binding posts, no Audyssey, no networking, etc) found in the 1613 and higher level models, so we strongly recommend skipping it and going straight to the 1613 model at a minimum. The higher level "CI" models however get some interesting new additions, most notably: the trickle down of dual HDMI inputs, Audyssey DSX, and direct DSD support over HDMI to the 2313ci; the debut of 4k video scaling on all "CI" models; and the addition of "Zone 2 HDMI" output and DenonLink to the 3313ci.

See the descriptions below for the full details on specific feature differences between various models, but here is a summary of the important changes to the xx13 model lineup:

* All models now have a front-panel HDMI input

* All models have GUI that can overlay on HDMI video signals

--- Basic GUI on 1513, 1613, 1713

--- Advanced GUI on 1913 and higher models

--- GUI can ONLY be shown on HDMI output (all models)

* All models have front USB (except 1513)

* Networking now available in ALL models (except 1513) including support for Airplay, Pandora, smartphone control, etc.

--- All Zone 2 models allow fully independent streaming of network audio to Zone 2

--- Previous limitation of AirPlay "hijacking" main zone has been resolved, AirPlay can go to Zone 2 independently (although note that there is an initial "hijack" when AirPlay is initiated; after the AirPlay stream is going you can switch Main Zone to a different source)

--- Spotify coming this summer as firmware upgrade to 1913 and higher models

--- New Denon Remote App Ver 3.0 with XX13 model unique features (click here to see Denon App review with pics)

* Audyssey DSX, dual HDMI outputs, and DSD over HDMI available in 2313ci and above

* The 3313ci model has 3 HDMI outputs - 2 for main zone and one for Zone 2 HDMI matrix output

* All models between 1513 and 2313 no longer have AM radio (they want you to switch to internet radio streams)

* All models no longer have iPod dock input with control port (direct USB connection has rendered it obsolete)

* The lower end models (1513 through 2113ci) have a new shallower chassis (reduction in depth of ~50mm / ~2 in)

Changes to remotes:

--- Remotes are unique to each model (i.e., no extraneous buttons for features only offered on higher model)

--- Remotes (except for 3313ci) no longer control other devices (a good change considering how bad they were at this before!)

--- Remotes add an [INFO] button which calls up current status info (surround mode, input, etc) on the TV screen

--- Remotes add an [OPTION] button (calls up on-the-fly options, mostly for network & USB sources)

--- Remotes no longer have [CH LEVEL] button (see below for more info)

Changes to behavior of channel levels (speaker volumes):

--- [CH LEVEL] button removed from remotes (except for 1513)

--- Global channel levels can adjusted via GUI: Speakers > Manual Setup > Levels

--- Adjusting channel levels via "Levels" menu will reset all channel levels globally for all surround modes

--- Center channel volume can be adjusted for each surround mode using "Dialogue Level" setting in "Audio" menu

--- Subwoofer volume can be adjusted for each surround mode using "Subwoofer Level" setting in "Audio" menu

--- Click here to read a detailed post on the new channel level behavior

Other minor notes on changes from xx12 to xx13 models:

* Cosmetic refresh with new glossy fascia and front panel display

* Audyssey mic ACM1HB replaces DM-A409 (1613 and higher); cosmetic changes made only, interchangeable with DM-A409

* GUI menu structure has been reorganized

--- You can now check firmware version in the "Information" section of the GUI (found in the "General" sub-menu)

* "Auto Standby" feature added (so receiver will shut itself down after not receiving an input for a designated amount of time)

* Rhapsody and Napster support removed from networked models menu of services

* HDMI inputs are no longer assignable on non "CI" models (1913 and below), but as there are HDMI inputs for every possible source name (and they can be renamed), this is a moot point.  HDMI inputs are assignable on 2113ci, 2313ci and 3313ci.

* The three 5.1 models (1513/1613/1713) no longer have pre-outs for expansion to 7 channels

* Dynamic Volume level settings renamed from "Day/Evening/Midnight" to "Light/Medium/Heavy"

* Restorer modes renamed to "High/Middle/Low" for Modes 1-3 respectively.  Ironically this refers to the strength needed to "restore", not the quality of the source, so use "Low" (the default) for high quality sources.

* Stand alone "power indicator light" replaces "power ring indicator"

FOR NON-CI MODELS COMPARISON CHART (1513, 1613, 1713, 1913)

FOR CI MODELS COMPARISON CHART (2113CI, 2313CI, 3313CI)

(Note that the Denon spec charts can have occasional errors, so don't flip out if at first glance it looks like something is amiss! If you have any questions check out the detailed info below or ask in this thread to confirm; when in doubt the product manuals are the final word as they tend to be accurate.)

5.1 Models with no Video Conversion (1513, 1613, 1713): The AVR 1513, 1613, and 1713 all share a common platform as basic 5.1 models with only limited analog connectivity (two composite inputs, no component video) and no ability to convert analog video inputs to HDMI output. So basically these models will work best if you just want to use them as HDMI switchboxes and/or are willing to run an extra cable to the TV for non-HDMI video sources.

Batpig's Buying Advice: As with prior years, we strongly recommend you avoid the most basic 1513 model as it is missing some critical features (most notable the lack of any kind of Audyssey processing) and has lesser build quality (e.g. only spring clips for speaker connection on the back) than the higher level models. The 1713 is basically a "souped up" 1613 and for the extra $50msrp is clearly the best value among these models. For that $50 premium over the 1613 you get MultEQ XT (instead of basic MultEQ), an extra HDMI input, the ability to interface with the receiver via a web browser (which also includes saving/loading configurations from a networked PC), and independent Zone 2 capability (with the addition of an external amp). For a "casual" 5.1 setup where you don't need Zone 2 features and aren't doing critical listening, the 1613 will do just fine, but for any "serious" setup the 1713 is the bang-for-the-buck king with those added features and is a great buy if you don't intend to go beyond 5.1.

7ch Models (1913, 2113ci, 2313ci, 3313ci): The AVR 1913 on up add progressively more power, inputs, and features. All of these models have 7 amps and can be run in either 7ch mode or 5ch in main zone + powered zone 2. They also add component video inputs (1 on the 1913 and 2113ci, 2 on the 2313ci/3313ci), analog > HDMI video conversion, video scaling (up to 1080p on the 1913, and up to 4k on the CI models), and better options for multiroom integration. All the "CI" models also have a 3rd year of warranty.

The 2113ci is essentially the "CI" version of the 1913. They are the same size, same chassis, and have the same back panel layout (other than the 2112ci adding the "CI" features of Zone 2 pre-outs, RS-232 serial port, and room-to-room IR remote jacks). Like last year, the 2313ci and 3313ci are built on a separate, beefier platform, with 2" deeper chassis and significantly increased non-HDMI connectivity on the back panel. The 2313ci also adds dual (parallel) HDMI outputs, whereas the 3313ci has three HDMI outputs with matrix distribution capability: two parallel outputs for "main zone" and one "zone 2" HDMI output that can feed a separate HDMI source to another room.

Batpig's Buying Advice: As with last year, the 2113ci seems like a no-brainer for the additional $70 over the 1913.  It remains to be seen what "street price" looks like but last year the gap was even closer than msrp from many retailers.  If only for the upgrade to MultEQ XT and the third year of warranty it is well worth it.  After that, I would only recommend going beyond the 2113ci if you will specifically use the extra features found in the next model up.  Do not do it because you want more power or better sound quality!

AVR-2113ci (7.1 @ 95w/ch) - $649 msrp

PRODUCT PAGE LINK

The 2113ci is virtually identical to the 1913, consider it the slightly "souped up" CI version of the 1913. Same size, same amps, same back panel connectivity, etc. In addition to everything listed above for the 1913, for the extra $70 you get the following additions on the 2113ci:

* MultEQ XT instead of basic MultEQ

* Video scaling up to 4k resolution

* Amplifiers rated at 95w instead of 90w

* HDMI inputs are assignable

* Adds Zone 2 pre-outs (so you can still run 7.1 in main zone and feed Zone 2 to an external amp)

--- Note that Zone 2 pre-outs are fixed (line level) meaning you must provide external volume control

--- You can control Zone 2 volume internally when powering Zone 2 speakers with Surr.Back amps

* Adds "CI" connectivity

--- RS-232 serial port and room-to-room IR remote jacks (but no 12v trigger)

* 3-year "CI" warranty (vs. 2-year warranty on non "CI" models)

AVR-2313ci (7.2 @ 105w/ch) - $849 msrp

PRODUCT PAGE LINK

As noted above, the 2313ci and 3313ci are built on a different platform than the lower level models. In addition to the chassis being 2" deeper than the 2113ci and lower models, these two receivers have significantly greater connectivity on the back panels (especially with non-HDMI legacy connections).  With the extra input "names" available they also allow assignment of HDMI inputs unlike the lower models (for which every potential input "name" has an HDMI input available).  They also add features like DSD support over HDMI, Audyssey DSX, dual HDMI outputs for Main Zone, enhanced multizone capabilities, 12v trigger outputs, and Audyssey Pro capability.

The 2313ci has all the features of the lower level models (networking etc) plus:

* 7 amp channels rated at 105 w/ch (8ohms)

* 3-year "CI" warranty (vs. 2-year warranty on non "CI" models)

* Video scaling of any source up to 4k resolution

* Audyssey PRO capable (requires purchase of pro kit + license or hiring an installer)

* Audyssey DSX (allows you to expand 5.1 to 7.1 with "wide" or "height" speakers instead of surround backs)

* DSD support over HDMI (for SACDs)

* 6 HDMI inputs (5 rear / 1 front) + 2 HDMI outputs (parallel output, cannot output different sources)

* Increased non HDMI connectivity:

--- 2 assignable component video inputs with 1 output

--- 4 assignable digital audio inputs (2 optical / 2 coax)

--- 5 rear analog audio inputs

--- 1 set of RCA analog outputs

--- 3 composite video inputs and 2 outputs

--- Dual subwoofer outputs (identical, just an internal y-splitter)

* Enhanced Multizone control:

--- Zone 2 pre-outs can be set to "fixed" or "variable" volume

--- Ability to adjust tone (bass/treble) on Zone 2 speakers

--- Ability to set an HPF (hi pass filter) on Zone 2 speakers if they can't handle bass

--- Ability to switch Zone 2 speakers between MONO and STEREO output

* Adds 12v trigger output to "CI" connectivity options

AVR-3313ci (7.2 @ ) - $1199 msrp

PRODUCT PAGE LINK

The 3313ci is the top of the xx13 model chain.  The most notable feature is the first-time-ever-in-a-receiver HDMI matrix implementation -- the three HDMI outputs are split with two for main zone (mirrored output) and a second "Zone 2 HDMI" output which can pass through a different source than what you are using in main zone.  It is important to emphasize however that this is simply a matrix switch -- do not confuse this with HDMI inputs being "legal" for audio to zone 2.  All you can do is pass a 2nd HDMI feed independently to "zone 2", but you will need an additional HDMI sink in the 2nd zone to receive and decode the HDMI signal.  So what this feature is useful for is passing an HDMI signal to a second TV or receiver in a different room.  It will NOT let you play HDMI audio to zone 2 speakers connected in the traditional fashion.

The 3313ci has the following upgrades over the 2313ci:

* 7 amp channels rated at 125 w/ch (8ohms)

* 11 pairs of speaker posts allowing you can connect and EQ up to 11 speakers (note that only 7 can be used at any time, but you can switch between wides, heights, and surround backs depending on the content and your preferences)

* Increased connectivity:

--- 1 extra rear HDMI input (so 7 total, 6 rear + 1 front)

--- 1 extra "Zone 2" HDMI output (matrix switch, allows an independent HDMI output for zone 2)

--- Component video output can be assigned to "Zone 2"

--- Full 7.2 channel pre-outs for connecting to an external amplifier

--- DenonLink HD dedicated input (for use with compatible DL disc players)

--- 1 extra analog PHONO input with preamp built-in

--- 1 extra composite video output for Zone 2

--- 1 extra 12v trigger output

* Support for a 3rd zone (audio only) with dedicated zone 3 pre-outs

* Aluminum faceplate with drop-down door to conceal front panel controls

--- Hidden front panel controls include D-pad + buttons for setup menu access so you can access GUI without remote

* AM radio!

* Larger front panel display with speaker channel light indicators (although there is only one set, you must now choose between "input" or "output" lights using the GUI)

Welcome to the Denon AVR-XX13 model thread. If this is your first visit to this thread, and you want to ask a question about a Denon AVR-XX13 model, either one that you own or one that you are thinking of buying, please provide the following information to allow for better responses to your questions:

(a) Identify the model number of the XX13 AVR you are asking about (eg. 2113CI), as there are 7 models discussed in this thread,

(b) Identify what you've done so far to troubleshoot the issue and what the front panel is displaying if an audio issue, (also take a few minutes to review the Troubleshooting link provided at the bottom of this post to see if your question is answered there),

(c) Unless you indicate what settings have been changed, the assumption will be that all settings are on the factory defaults (ie. usually "Auto"),

(d) If the advice given seems to simplistic or obvious, don't shoot the advice giver as we have no idea of the level of your technical understanding,

(e) If there is no response to your post, it either means no one knows the answer or it has simply been overlooked so repost if you still haven't resolved your issue,

(f) If you post a question in this thread and are given advice and either it or some other advice (eg. Denon phone support, Denon "Ask a Question" email support) resolves your issue, have the common courtesy to post back what solution resolved your issue so others can learn from it as well,

(g) If the issue is not user error or not just a misunderstanding on how the AVR works, please call Denon support so the issue is registered, and,

(h) If you don't live in either the USA or CA, please either indicate your country location in your profile or your post as some Denon models from other regions in the world (eg. 1912, 2313) differ in configuration from their USA/CA counterparts otherwise responses made will be regarding the USA/CA model.

Known Issues for the Denon AVR-XX13 models

This post will be used to list any known issues being discussed in this thread or identified by Denon as well as their resolution (if any).

-----------------------

1.  A few 2313CI and 3313CI owners have indicated that when running Audyssey from the [Setup Wizard] menu, the process stops after only 6 mic positions whereas when running it from the [Speakers - Audyssey Setup] menu the process goes to the expected 8 mic positions.   This may also apply to the 1713 and 2113CI as well.

8/11/12: This was an intentional change made by Denon to reduce the amount of time to run AUTO SETUP (based on some owners complaining the process was taking too long) and although may have minimal effect on the integrity of the Audyssey filtering process, for the most accurate results it's recommended you bypass the Setup Wizard using the [Speakers - Audyssey Setup] method to get all 8 mic positions.   Note: This also applies to Marantz X007 models as well.

2.  Although the new Denon Remote app for Android devices webpage states "This application does not support tablet devices", forum member DavidBullus has confirmed it works on his 2113 using a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.

3.  If there have been no previous HDMI handshake issues with either a cable or sat box connected via HDMI to the AVR, and suddenly either audio or video issues start occuring with the cable/sat box, check to see when the last time the cable/sat box got a firmware update and whether the issue started immediately after the update as firmware updates to the cable/sat box have been known to cause both audio (dropouts) and video (loss of GUI) issues.  The work around until another firmware update can be issued to the cable/sat box to resolve the issue is to either connect cable/sat box (HDMI) directly to the TV with cable/sat box (optical) to the AVR, or cable/sat box (component/optical) to the AVR.

4.  If there is a sudden loss of power to the unit, while powered ON, it's possible the Audyssey configuration will revert to the previous configuration, although other settings should remain current (noted by a 3313CI owner).   If it becomes necessary to do a soft reset, be sure to set the unit to Standby first and then remove the power cord for a few minutes.

5.  Although not always repeatable, a few owners (2113CI, 2313CI) have noted that occasionally after playing a network audio source (eg. Pandora, Airplay), changing to a different source (eg. CBL/SAT, BD) results in the loss of video from that source.  Power cycling (off/on) the AVR will resolve this issue.

6.  Pandora users have noticed some glitches to include greyed out items in the GUI menu.

7.  Due to some configuration changes recently made by Pandora, until a firmware update is installed to fix the issue, Pandora cannot be logged in to.  Note this issue is separate and distinct from the Pandora issue discusse in #6 above.

12/5/2012 - See post #6 for dates on when each model is to receive the Pandora firmware update to fix this issue.

8.  With the NET/USB source selected, the Video Source setting will not work to select a different video source when playing a network audio source.  It will however work with a USB source connected.  This is a new design change for the XX13 models.

9.  Denon has started shipping new XX13 units with plastic covers over the top grill apparently for protection if the top becomes too warm.

10.  A few 1913 and 2113CI owners have noted that after a period of time (several months), when set to a Network source, the audio level will drop in level compared to other sources.  This issue would require repair to resolve.

11.  In order to play Airplay to Zone 2 (or Zone 3 on the 3313CI), the main zone must remain ON.  Airplay will initially "hijack" the main zone source, but once the source is playing on Zone 2, the main zone source can be reselected.

12. Center channel distortion playing DD+ audio from Netflix -   This has been reported on the 1613, 1713, and 2313CI models (possibly exists on the other models as well) and confirmed by Denon to be an issue and working on a firmware update to resolve the issue.  As a work around either deselect DD+ to play the standard DD 5.1 audio or select PCM on the source device to decode the DD+ to PCM.

13.  Sirius/XM server disconnect: Some Sirius/XM subscribers have noted an issue with connecting to the Sirius/XM servers after the most recent Netflix firmware update. Apparently Sirius/XM made some recent changes that are causing this issue. Denon is aware of the problem and is expected to release a firmware update by the end of June to resolve it.

14. Audio lip sync issues: If the audio is ahead of the video, try using the Setup - Audio - Audio Delay (0ms-200ms). If the video is ahead of the audio, try setting Setup - Video - HDMI Video - Auto Lip Sync to OFF. If still no joy, try setting Setup - HDMI Video - Video Conversion to OFF, noting that in doing so you will lose the Master Volume display on the TV as well as the GUI will no longer overlay on the source video, but rather on a black screen.

15. No longer able to logon to Pandora: Pandora updated their Security certificates on October 24, 2016 which has resulted in no longer being able to logon to Pandora. Denon will have to release a firmware update to resolve the issue; which has already started on the 2013 and newer models after a similar update was done by Pandora July 2016. Refer to the following Denon URL for the most up to date information as to when your specific model is expected to receive the firmware update ---> http://denon.custhelp.com/app/answer...-using-pandora

16. No longer able to logon to Pandora: The recent (March 2018) firmware update that removed Spotify has caused an issue with logging on to Pandora. Denon is currently looking into the situation to find the root cause and should have a resolution soon. In the meantime, please utilize AirPlay to stream Pandora to the AVR if you’re an iOS/Apple user. If you’re an Android user, the only workaround at this time would be to hardwire your device to one of the AVR’s analog inputs. You can also use an external Bluetooth receiver hardwired to the AVR.

17. SiriusXM no longer supported: After March 31, 2020 SiriusXM streaming from the on board menu will no longer be available.

How do I reset the microprocessor or do a network reset on my Denon AVR-XX13 model?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When the AVR is acting up or doing something strange, the first thing to try is a "soft reset" (ie. set the AVR to Standby and unplug the power cord for about 10 minutes, then plug back in the power cord and turn ON). If this doesn't resolve the issue, then you'll need to reset the microprocessor. You'll also want to reset the microprocessor before doing anything else if you purchased the AVR as an "open box" or demo/used unit to ensure all settings are returned to their original factory defaults. For the 1513 and 1613, jot down any settings you want to return to (1713 and higher feature Web Control that allows the config file to be saved to a PC that can then be LOADed after the reset to restore all previous settings) as all settings will be wiped out and require you to run AUTO SETUP again. The instructions are listed in your owner's manual as shown below ...

Microprocessor Reset

1513 - p. 54

1613 - p. 123

1713 - p. 126

1913 - p. 146

1 - Turn off the power using ON/STANDBY.

2 - Press ON/STANDBY while simultaneously pressing the "Source Select" (leftmost buttons just under the front panel display)

Firmware Update Information for the Denon AVR-XX13 models

(1) Denon does not send out any kind of notification that a firmware update is available for the non-networking models (ie. 1513). If you are experiencing any issues, review post #4 to see if it is listed there. Regardless, if your issue cannot be resolved from responses to your question in this thread, give Denon a call (800-497-8921) to determine your next course of action.

(2) Firmware updates for the 1513 will require the unit being either dropped off at or shipped (at owner's expense) to a Denon authorized repair facility that is able to install updates to the 1513 (as not all facilities have the necessary jig to install to a non-networking model). The PanurgyOEM facility in NJ is able to repair/install firmware to any model. Note that in past years, the non-networking models generally do not get any firmware updates unless there is a major issue (AFAIK, there are were no firmware updates for the non-networking XX12 models as of 5/7/12), while past year's networking models generally have gotten about 6-10 updates over the first year or two after being released (mostly to improve the network connectivity).

(3) Firmware updates for the network models (ie. 1613 and higher) can be installed by the owner via a network connection to the Denon servers. Although it's not necessary to update your unit if you are not experiencing any problems, it's generally a good idea to keep it updated so that if there are any problems with the update the unit will still be covered under warranty. The update process generally doesn't take more than 30 minutes once the download begins and also generally does not erase any settings, although it's always a good idea to SAVE the settings file (1713 and higher only) using the Web Control feature prior to doing the update just in case.  Note that if the update process is stuck on "Authenticating", ensure a source other than NET/USB is selected and just let it continue for up to a few hours and it should eventually begin the update process (although note that Denon's servers have been known to crash the first day of release due to the overload, so you may want to wait a few days before trying again).   Some have noted that rather than selecting the "Check for Update", instead simply selecting the "Start Update" will avoid the "Authenticating" issue.  One XX12 owner found that disconnecting ALL sources to the AVR enabled the unit to connect to the Denon servers and update the firmware when the update process had previously been unsuccessful for almost a year.

During the update, the AVR will go into Standby mode, but will continue to update status on the front panel display. If the update seems to be hung up (ie. goes beyond 1 hour) ... power the AVR to Standby, unplug it for a few minutes and power back on and attempt the update again. If the update fails to load, check the network environment (ie. reset the router, replace the router with a more current/robust model, or ideally wire directly to the router if connecting wirelessly)    If still not having any luck with the update, perform a Network Reset as shown in post #5 above.  You may also want to consider purchasing a long (100'+) Cat5/6 cable for network updates only for a higher probability of a successful install. Also note, that once the update has completed, there is no way of returning to an earlier version of firmware.

Networking model owner's will be notified automatically when there is a firmware update when the AVR is turned ON as long as the Notification Update setting is set to ON (factory default). For more information refer to General - Firmware - Notifications -Update in your respective Owner's manual. To manually check for an update, refer to General - Firmware - Update - Check for Update in your manual.

(4) USB firmware update: TBD

(5) Denon will sometimes make "minor" changes to the firmware with each new manufacturing production run, so it's not unusual to see a higher firmware version number on a newer unit of the same model. For the non-networking models, this doesn't mean an older unit needs to be returned to get the firmware updated, rather it only needs to be updated (if a firmware update is available) if you are experiencing a problem that resetting the microprocessor will not resolve. The year/month the unit was mfr'd can be determined by looking at the first 3 digits of the serial number (eg. 204xxxxxxxx would be April 2012) which can be found on the original box as well as on the back panel of the AVR.

(6)  What is my unit's current firmware version?  The current firmware version on the 1613 and higher models can be determined from the AVR's menu: General --> Information --> Firmware Version.

(7) There are two firmware notification settings, both of which default to "ON" from the factory..... "Update" (fixes) and "Upgrade" (new feature). Although an "upgrade" would generally come at some additional cost, the internet radio Spotify "upgrade" will be available to all XX13 models (1913 and higher models) during the  summer 2012.  When either an "update" or "upgrade" is available the networking models will display a message alerting you to this "update" or "upgrade" every time you turn on the AVR.  If you prefer not to install the update/upgrade, then simply change the appropriate setting at General --> Firmware --> Notifications ---> Update/Upgrade to OFF (factory default is ON) and it will go away.

This area will be used to track the changelog of the firmware updates for the network models (1613 and higher).

I'm trying to get sound out of speakers 6&7. I discovered that Zone2 speakers will only play from an analogue source (Really??), but neither of my media sources have analogue out (PS3 or AppleTV). When I try to assign the back speakers (located in another room) as "Front B," I still get no sound out of them. All I'm looking to do is have stereo audio play out of this other set of speakers.

the PS3 absolutely has analog audio ouput, you need to use the proprietary A/V cable that came with it:

You do need to enable "multi audio out" on the PS3 in order to use HDMI + analog audio simultaneously.

the AppleTV can be used in Zone 2 with the addition of a simple optical>analog converter. You could also stream AirPlay directly to the receiver (instead of through the AppleTV) as the internal network stream will go to Zone 2.

the "analog only" restriction for Zone 2 is an industry-wide thing, it's not some Denon-specific restriction. Only rare, high end models can do digital audio to Zone 2 and even then it's highly restricted.

you can configure the extra two amps for "Front B" use but there is no A/B switch on the receiver or remote, rather you must dive into the GUI and go to the "Front Speaker Setup" menu (pg 115 of the manual) to activate the "B" speakers, so not really a practical solution for frequent use.

Thanks for the information. While I'm not sure I still have the proprietary PS3 cable (after a number of moves), I appreciate the two "cable" solutions. Also, I'll dive into the GUI for Front B to see how onerous the process gets. An old Sony amp had a button for A/B. It seems silly to bury the feature beneath menus. Again, thanks.

What about ARC audio from a TV? Any chance that works in Zone 2?

And what about iPod/MP3 player audio from USB?

Don't you need a separate HD tuner for that?

plenty more info coming soon, in the meantime please use this thread to discuss ACTUAL info on these models only, specifically real world questions on features, setup, use, etc. Please keep the speculation, feature wishes, etc. in the xx13 rumor thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1368799

The higher level "CI" models however get some interesting new additions, most notably: the trickle down of dual HDMI inputs, Audyssey DSX, and direct DSD support over HDMI to the 2313ci; the debut of 4k video scaling on all "CI" models; and the addition of zone 2 HDMI output and DenonLink to the 3313ci.

* All models have front USB (except 1513)

* Networking now available in ALL models (except 1513) including support for Airplay, Pandora, smartphone control, etc.

--- All Zone 2 models allow fully independent streaming of network audio to Zone 2

--- Previous limitation of AirPlay "hijacking" main zone has been resolved, AirPlay can go to Zone 2 independently

--- Spotify coming this summer as firmware upgrade to 1913 and higher models

--- New Denon Remote App Ver 3.0 with XX13 model unique features
* Audyssey DSX, dual HDMI outputs, and DSD over HDMI available in 2313ci and above

* The 3313ci model will have 3 HDMI outputs - 2 for main zone and one for Zone 2 HDMI matrix output

* All models (except 1513) no longer have AM radio (they want you to switch to internet radio streams)

* All models no longer have iPod dock input with control port (direct USB connection has rendered it obsolete)

* New xx13 models have a shallower body (reduction in depth of ~50mm / ~2 in)

Other minor notes on changes from xx12 to xx13 models:

* Cosmetic refresh with new glossy fascia and front panel display

* Audyssey mic ACM1HB replaces DM-A409 (1613 and higher); cosmetic changes made only, interchangeable with DM-A409

* GUI menu structure has been reorganized

* Remotes are unique to each model (i.e., no extraneous buttons for features only offered on higher model)

* Remotes no longer control other devices (a good change considering how bad they were at this before!)

* Remotes add an [INFO] button which calls up current status info (surround mode, input, etc) on the TV screen

* Rhapsody and Napster support removed from networked models menu of services

* HDMI inputs are no longer assignable, but as there are HDMI inputs for every possible source name (and they can be renamed), this is a moot point

* The three 5.1 models (1513/1613/1713) no longer have pre-outs for expansion to 7 channels

* Dynamic Volume level settings renamed from "Day/Evening/Midnight" to "Light/Medium/Heavy"

Can you elaborate on the things in bold above? I'm wondering if I'm missing something real usefull in the 2312ci on which I just took delivery yesterday.

Thanks..

Thanks..
Audyssey DSX - allows for both Front Wide and Front Height speakers, whereas DD PLIIz (2312CI) only allows for Front Height.

Dual HDMI Monitor outputs - allows for video to 2 different displays, especially useful when there is an HDTV and PJ in the same room

DSD over HDMI - refers to the DSD audio from a SACD (bitstream) being converted by the AVR as SACD converted to PCM in the player can pass over HDMI on the 2312CI

4k upscaling - not likely to be a common feature for at least 3-4 years if not longer

It doesn't look like I'm going to miss any of that.

I have a traditional 7.1 set up and might go front height but probably not. I don't have one SACD (Thinking audio on blu-ray is better?). Upscaling.. Eh. Not really a fan of that sort of stuff because you just cannot create pixels that aren't there in the first place.

#20 ·
^^^

if you have a fixed pixel display, you have no choice other than to "create pixels that aren't there" (or de-interlace, or both) if the source resolution doesn't match the display resolution... you don't have a choice... either the avr, source or display will do it, whether you realize it or not...

although has been stated many times... in "real world viewing on small displays" (i.e. not projection), it's likely that the processing in the display is as good as anything you'll find in an avr...

video processing is one of those things that "once upon a time" held a certain importance... however, it is now a "commodity" item... unfortunately, it still holds a "certain importance" in some people's minds...

Then what are you waiting for? Get that 2312CI set up and start enjoying the wonderful world of Audyssey!

Well, I already do enjoy Audyssey with my 889! Our house is in a state of disarray due to the remodel we started last month (I'm sure the dust generated from that in addition to moving the 889 around is what caused 2 of 4 HDMI ports to quit working). Last night was spent putting up a mirror and lights over the vanity/sink one of the bathrooms. I have to keep my better half happy too! Tonight I'll open the box and hook it up but I'll reserve the rest of the discussion for the XX12 thread.

if you have a fixed pixel display, you have no choice other than to "create pixels that aren't there" (or de-interlace, or both) if the source resolution doesn't match the display resolution... you don't have a choice... either the avr, source or display will do it, whether you realize it or not...

although has been stated many times... in "real world viewing on small displays" (i.e. not projection), it's likely that the processing in the display is as good as anything you'll find in an avr...

video processing is one of those things that "once upon a time" held a certain importance... however, it is now a "commodity" item... unfortunately, it still holds a "certain importance" in some people's minds...

My display is multi-sync so it will change to whatever input it receives. Now for 4k, there really isn't much available at this time so and upscaling from a 1080i source through the the AVR to a 4k monitor really doesn't make much sense to me.

I thought I would share my impressions of the Denon AVR-1713. I received it last Friday (5/4/12) shipped directly from Denon. I normally buy from the usual suspects such as JR, EE, etc., but Denon had the unit in stock and their Customer Service was actually quite good. They even included a Denon baseball hat. The package arrived double-boxed and with air-filled bubbles (or whatever they’re called). The box itself is a bit smaller than I remember previous models coming in and instead of a cardboard-colored box with some text on the outside, this box was very colorful. In any case, I hooked the receiver up to a 5.1 system consisting of Monitor Audio inwalls (88db, 6 Ohms) all around and an Epik Legend filling in the low end.

Looks:

I like what Denon has done with this new line. It still looks like a Denon, but a bit sleeker than previous models. I’m also glad they did away with the 2nd knob for input selection they always included on the left. The receiver doesn’t stand out, but doesn’t draw attention either.

Remote:

Although an improvement over previous models, buy yourself a universal remote. I will say that the 1712 codes in Logitech’s database worked fine on the 1713 and only a few buttons required learning.

GUI:

The GUI isn’t as nice as say Harman Kardon or Yamaha receivers, but it does the job. It will overlay over HDMI video which is nice and does have a volume overlay. I have setup many Denon receivers in the past and I feel this one was a little easier, but still had lots of weirdness to it. Definitely check out Batpig’s setup guides.

Video Performance:

The 1713 passes video through and did not appear to suffer any ill effects due to the minimal processing involved with overlaying the GUI. It will pass video through even though it's in standby.

Updating:

Surprisingly within a few days of having the receiver, it notified me that an upgrade was available. The upgrade itself was done over the network and took about 20 minutes. It did retain all customizations I had done prior to upgrading so no need to break out the Audyssey Mic again.

Audio Performance:

The 1713 includes Audyssey MultEQ XT which I’m a fan of. The receiver sounds like any other using this suite of software and I pushed it to levels high enough for my taste without hearing any strain. In this particular room, Audyssey certainly helped deal with the inwalls and most notably with the LFE. It will not decode straight DSD, but will accept player-decoded PCM.

Nework Features:

The 1713 includes Pandora, DLNA, vTuner, Airplay, and SiriusXM. Not much, but those are the ones I use on a regular basis. I didn’t encounter any issues loading up material although I didn’t try Airplay as I’m an Android user. The receiver will play FLAC which was a nice surprise as many receivers I’ve encountered will not. Another nice thing was that Denon included Page Up, Page Down, and Search functions so you can easily find what you want rather than having to scroll endlessly.

Summary:

The 1713 is a keeper. It is a very well-balanced receiver. I believe Denon has really found a groove by offering receivers with just enough features for most folks that include decent amp sections and great EQ software.

Hi batpig, jdsmoothie et al,

Thanks for you help in this and other Denon threads. The general "What's new in XX13" section in Post #1 is helpful info.

Would you please consider adding (to Post # 1) one-to-one comparison information between the XX12 and XX13 models as the XX13 models get released?

This is a critical few weeks for those of us who can pick between a XX13 and a discounted but "higher" XX12 model. So a set of direct comparisons will help us decide between, say 2312ci vs 2113ci (of course, the xx13ci are not out yet, but you get the idea ...).

The type of advice you have in Post # 2 of the XX12 owner thread ("Which model is right for me?") is also great stuff. Something like that for xx13 would be great.
