My bad. Apologies. NewsCorp bought USSB in 1998, it didn't get control of DirecTV until 2003.
Washington Notes The FCC News Release Washington, D.C. -- Today, the Federal Communications Commission grants—with conditions and enforceable commitments—approval of the assignment and transfer of control of broadcast, satellite, and other radio licenses from General Electric Company (GE) to Comcast Corporation. The approval will allow GE and Comcast to create a joint venture involving NBC Universal, Inc. (NBCU) and Comcast. An Order further explaining the...
Washington Notes Comcast-NBC Deal Wins Federal Approval By Brian Stelter and Tim Arango, The New York Times, in the “Media Decoder” blog, January 18, 2010 The proposed combination of Comcast and NBC Universal was approved by the Federal Communications Commission and the Justice Department on Tuesday, smoothing the way for the deal to close by the end of January. As expected, the approvals came with significant conditions attached. The combination of...
Comcast apparently spent close to $14 million dollars lobbying last year ($3.1 million the first quarter, $3.8 million the second alone) so I suppose it got what it paid for. Sad. And more than a bit outrageous.
Back in 1998 when NewsCorp bought (control of) DirecTV, the sat company had about 4.5 million subscribers -- less than a 5% market share. Comcast, on the other hand, already has about a 30% market share, NBC O&Os have more than that and the NBC affiliates make up thertest. So, in all, Comcast/NBC will have far more than 100% market shares -- and the clout (and lobbying power) that goes with it. In all respect, foxeng, comparing these two mergers is like comparing apples...

On The Air Tonight: Critics Choice Film Awards, Maher's Back By Roger Catlin, Hartford Courant TV Critic, in his “TV Eye” blog, January 14, 2011 (All times Eastern) It may not have the history of, say, Sunday's Golden Globes Awards, but the "16th Annual Critics' Choice Awards" (VH1, 9 p.m.) has, in recent years, been a more accurate predictor of Oscar success. Last year, for example, "The Hurt Locker' won both best picture and best director from the...
