You might also consider running RG6 coax, though perhaps the time for that is past.
2" minimum is a good rule of thumb. And for bass absorption, 1" won't do jack; 2" is okay; 4" is better.
I shouldn't have to, should I? And timers need constant resetting due to seasonal changes and power outages. I have no idea if it's the LEDs that are failing (I frankly doubt it), but I'm not going to take it apart to test them.

I have a 18" rope light used as a nightlight. It stays on 24/7. In the last three years two of them have died; each seems to have lasted about 1 1/2 years. This doesn't seem right. I have (dimmed) incandescents that last that long. ...

Or just train your kids to sleep through the thunder. When I was a kid we lived under a runway approach. I can't recall ever being awakened by a four engine turboprop 100' off the deck. Not after the first couple weeks, anyway.
So how much are you paying for extenders? Why not use HDMI cable? They can be had cheap, like $15, if you know not to shop at a box store.
