Be sure to take a peek at this post, http://www.avsforum.com/t/1449695/comparison-of-4-projectors-viewsonic-pro8200-vs-benq-w7000-vs-jvc-rs-45-vs-mits-hc4000/30#post_22794467 and the rest of the thread regarding the black level info. etc., before you make a decision. I think you can get a Epson 5010 for around that price now, and it will be brighter with good blacks and be pretty close, if not better than the 7000 for 3D, if your interested. GL
Grats, and now let the Hdmi Handshake Olympic Games Begin! But, seriously, be prepared for a possible problem with that length of run and 3d. Not saying, just sayin.
It appears he went with a HC4000 according to this thread. http://www.avsforum.com/t/1331261/official-mitsubishi-hc4000-only-thread/2670#post_22665333 A pretty good thread on the HD and last years model 3010, which is very similar, but a tad brighter with a little less lag. http://www.avsforum.com/t/1369628/epson-3010-vs-optoma-hd33-a-users-perspective Take a tour through coderguys's top projector picks if you want some good starting info....
If you didn't see the source image change, then its a good possibility it was a conversion demo you saw. I think the new Sony 50 may have knocked the Epson off it's 3D throne in this price range, but still beats the Sony with a brighter image from what I've read. Check the shootout thread in the over $3000 area, http://www.avsforum.com/t/1434826/sony-hw50-benq-w7000-epson-5020-jvc-rs55-jvc-rs-46-jvc-rs4810-jvc-rs56-mini-shootout-2012-2013
Be interesting to see how it looks. If the street price can drop close to $750 incl 3d, 2yr warranty, 5000 hr bulb. Hopefully the gaming lag will be almost non-existent.
Per the manual, http://files.support.epson.com/pdf/plhc87u/plhc87uug.pdf Menu>Front/Ceiling, reverse that setting for right side up placement.
It could be considered Epsons home theater "entry" pj, ahead of their 5010/20 and the 6010/20's. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a pj in the $300-$500 range that has the capabilities and image this "entry" pj has.
I doubt those features would be available with a "user hack", since I mentioned in your other post, the dip switches were compared, and were all the same with the exception of the lcd alignment feature.
A "game", I dunno why the feature wasn't made available, but as I mentioned, the other dip switches were all the same, and features requiring hardware differences, won't be available with a driver/software setting change.
Depending on your other requirements, price, 3d? Did you have a look at these comparisons? I think there maybe better overall choices. http://www.avsforum.com/t/1391476/coderguys-top-projector-picks You did mention, "no keystoning needed", use of keystone should be avoided if possible, but lens shift can be used without any significant negative image quality effects. No requirement for the need of "lens shift" will open up alot of other options.
