Updating the firmware on the 83 has never effected the mod chip, go ahead and update it, it's risk free.

Neither my Panasonic BD player or BD-83 can see it but both can still see twonky? I installed it on my WHS2011 Server, configured it and then set it to run as a service with the correct permissions for my server (admin rights) but no joy.

Does this actually transcode the formats the 83 wont currently play via DLNA? if not there's no point switching from twonky imo (which I paid for).

I had a play with using Heights via PLIIz instead of DSX-Wides yesterday, I definitely found Wides to create a much more engaging sound field than Heights.
