Yes, I think most surround receivers require at minimum the two L/R speakers to be connected in order to operate.
I would have never even considered this but now I am intrigued myself. My gut's telling me this won't work, but I can't think of any technical reasons why it shouldn't. Please keep us updated with your findings.
