Here in Gaston County I've been able to get WHKY's signal at times, most likely from the Hickory transmitter, but only at night.

Apparently, each system served by the headend has a slightly different of local channels sent out in digital; for example, while you've got WLOS in Lenoir on 81-2, there's no 81-2 in Hickory or Lincolnton. WTBL's presence on the Lenoir system is most likely because it's a local station in that area carried on a "must-carry" basis, or there may be sufficient viewer demand to justify its carriage there.

The DCX3501-M can be used as a stand-alone box (I have one with single-room service in my Charter-serviced residence), though cable companies may, at their option, limit deployments of this model to customers with multi-room DVR service, as Comcast appears to be doing in your case.
