I will second giving the new Pioneer's a look and yes those D3 amps seem to handle every speaker we have them hooked to since none of our clients have the same brand or model with the exception of Triads when we install ceiling or wall...

If your setup worked with component cables then what did he use for audio because component is video only?
Your set top box may require an optical or coax for sound to the AVR .
It would probably help if you listed the cable box brand...
It does seem to point to either a setting in the AVR or the AVR itself do to the fact you state it works when connected directly to your display.
Also as Bob requested what brand and model some are notorious for HDMI issues of late.
To add to what Steve has already posted I would add Air Studios would not allow their logo on the Pioneer if it in fact was throwing away info regarding LFE.
