I had a similar listening experience to the OP with some Def Tech PM1000's - I knew they had to sound better than they did there. Hooking them up out of phase will do that every time.

Bad/loose connection at either speaker or receiver terminals - you fixed it when you switched wires. The length difference is insignificant, especially with 12 gauge.

Not a good idea. Question: can you cut a hole in the wall, cover it with a grill cloth, and put the sub right in the opening flush with the wall? As long as the sub is front firing you should be OK. Which M&K models are they?...
