I'm not quite sure if I understand what you mean by "just use the optical". Try and disable Audio over HDMI in the Cable box and receiver settings? I can't get stereo audio working either. It seems to be video that isn't behaving.

haha..yeah..well..total cost was about 185, with a 25' dayton sub cable, I didnt have one laying around..so threw it in for 14 bucks more..but i didnt think it was tooo bad for 185 shipped..
