Inland Empire was confounding because it was at times utterly terrifying, and utterly confusing and frustrating. Too many ideas with little of substance to hold it all together. Hard to believe it was the work of a mature filmmaker, it felt more like a scattershot debut by a young troubled genius with lots of potential and his best years ahead of him. Still, I'm glad I saw it. Lynch, even when not firing on all cylinders, is still a cut above.
