Edge lit can be thin, and thinness is the "feature" that allowed them to initially charge a premium versus fluorescent. As the cost of LED lighting has reached parity with fluorescent, there's no longer a need for a sales gimmick. It's OK if nobody can tell the difference between an LED and a fluorescent, because the price is the same.
