You misunderstood. I am comparing the Pio at home vs an 80s Kenwood and an Onkyo HT-RC360 (much lower-end). Calibration does not help; in fact the eq choices that it makes mucks everything up further. Maybe people just like it when sound is more compressed and less alive? I dunno. I do know that I am not imagining things, and that the idea that room calibration is even necessary in order to enjoy basic 2-channel audio is a bit much.
