I had the 60" xbr1 with terrible color uniformity issues. Sony switched me out to a Pearl. I would never go back. I'm on a 92" screen and sit about 12' back. You may want a slightly smaller screen at 10' viewing unless you'll be doing mostly HD.
I am watching a Pearl on a 92" Dalite motorized screen from about 12' back and love it. This is my first front projector and I thought that moving from a 60" RPTV to 92" screen would be overwhelming. It's great, much more of a theater.
I have a Pearl and 92" Dalite motorized screen. I could not get myself to spend thousands on a screen without having some direct experience.
I don't think you would want to sit closer than 10' to a 92" screen with SD DVD material. With high def you could go larger. We sit at about 12' but don't need a huge screen as part of our theater experience. Ambient light is going to be a big deal for serious viewing enjoyment.
I love my Pearl, but also love B&W films. Objectively, SXRD technology is not kind to B&W, it's too easy to see ANY non uniformity. I find myself passing on non color titles to avoid 'watching the image instead of the content'. Bring some of your favorite oldies to your demo and look carefully.
I too have learned this the hard way: buying cutting edge technology? know your shipping options and keep your packaging. The Pearl has been great so far [and the box is smaller than a car], but the 60" SXRD RPTV was no fun to repair two times. Having good dealer support is important in getting good customer service from Sony.
