Don't worry about the specs given by the manufacturer, but you should check out reviews of both. Personally, I'm willing to drop a size for better picture quality.
The D8000 series has been rated very close to the VT30 series for picture quality (CNET gave both a 9). The D7000 is pretty much the same thing as the D8000 minus a few features that don't affect PQ.
