I bought a refurbished unit and haven't had any problem with it yet. I've only had it for 9 months though and still have 4 years to go on the warranty. Emotiva is pretty good about warranty repairs but not sure how they handle shipping....

That won't be easy to do since the 2.1 system gets its power from the subwoofer module. You'd have to either go with a passive speaker pack with a receiver or spend a premium on active monitors. I don't think you will get anything decent...
