It should be fine unless you are lacking space behind your sub and avr. Just make sure to use the same color on each end.
If it's not a long run you can use any RCA cable probably RG59 or RG6. However, for longer runs I agree with kikk that you should use RG6, I believe RG6 is at minimum 18 AWG. If you are really worried about it, buy 2 different ones...

Buy your speaker wire from Monoprice. You can get AWG 16 or 14 wire cheap.
