Personally, I would go with 5.1. You can spend more on SL/SR speakers taking out SBL/SBR channels. I know some BDs have 7.1 listed but this is usually 5.1 mixed to 7.1 having the SBL/SBR channels the same as SL/SR.

The new models are more efficient than older plasmas but not as efficient as LCD.
