High-end headphones specialist HiFiMan has announced two new reference-class in-ear monitor (IEM) headphones, the RE2000 ($2000) and RE800 ($699). Both models feature nanotechnology the company calls Topology Drivers that is said to reduce distortion and improve sound quality.
HiFiMan says the diaphragms of topology drivers feature distinct geometric patterns created by the application of nanoparticles. The company claims that by manipulating the pattern, thickness, and nanoparticle compound used, it can achieve the performance parameters it seeks.
The RE2000 is HiFiMan’s new flagship and the first model to offer removable cables. The gold plated brass enclosure houses a 9.2 mm Topology diaphragm dynamic driver that covers 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz and offers 103 dB sensitivity with 60 ohm impedance. The included detachable cable features silver-coated copper wire.
The RE800 also features a 9.2 mm Topology diaphragm dynamic driver that’s housed in a more compact gold plated brass enclosure than the RE2000. It shares the same frequency response of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz and offers 105 decibel sensitivity + 60 ohm impedance. The silver-coated copper cable is not removable.
HiFiMan founder and president, Dr. Fang Bian, notes that “Our new IEMs, with the Topology driver, have substantially improved performance that is readily audible. In fact, the idea behind the new Topology Diaphragm was actually inspired by my Ph.D. thesis that different Nano materials have differing structures and each of those materials has their own properties. Therefore, by carefully controlling the diaphragm surface structure we can yield different results in acoustic performance to a degree previously unobtainable.”
So there you have it, nanoparticles equal previously unobtainable acoustic performance, says HiFiMan. You gotta love technology!
If you’re interested in finding out more about these high performance IEMs, and other awesome headphone products from HiFiMan, the company will be exhibiting at the first annual LA Audio Show. It’s taking place on June 2-4 at the Sheraton Gateway LAX. Dr. Fang Bian will be there, along with other company staff, to demonstrating various models and answer questions.
