Superb Blu-ray player

review by mdanderson

This Oppo player is just fantastic to me when it comes to the level of sound quality from this amazing machine. I have it connected to an Emotiva UMC-200 and I am using the analog outs as well as the hdmi outs. I have the hdmi 1 going directly to the tv and hdmi 2 going to the UMC-200. I am also using an Emotiva XPA-5 amp and an ATI -1502 2channel amp for a 7.1 setup.

This certainly is a step up for me from my Oppo 93. The sound quality using the analog outs is great, and it is a pleasure to listen to multi channel music like sacds and dvd audio discs. I am using the unbalanced rca outs and it works just fine. Movies sound fantasic as well and I prefer to use the analog outs for movies rather than hdmi even though hdmi is ok. It just sounds better to me. The USB dac on the rear of the 105 works fine and music files from my computer sound very nice also when using the networking. The network can be buggy at times as it reverts back to the home page at time when I try to play a file.

My favorite artists are Steely Dan, Dire Straits, James Taylor, Alison Krauss, Fleetwood Mac, Yes and Wishbone Ash.

Customer service from Oppo is excellent and firmware updates are very easy

Finally a top quality, truly universal player that does all the things I want and does them VERY well!

review by pvanosta

My system does double duty:
- attempt at high-end stereo audio reproduction
- home theater for Cable TV and Blu Ray viewing

My music sources span the entire media spectrum (PC with DLNA and a 6TB Raid, containing MP3, FLAC 16/44 up to 24/192, WAV, APE, 1,000 CD's and SACD's, a few DVD-A and (since I bought the OPPO), a handful of DSD files on USB drive).

I have been a faithful Sony BD player customer (I still have 3 Sony BD players in the house, including the top of the line BDP-S790, plus a PS3) for a long time, simply because of their ability to play network media, USB media, SACD and Blu Ray. Then, 6 months ago, I bought a dedicated media streamer as part of a broader upgrade plan on the audio side of my system (the Cambridge Audio Stream Magic 6). I used it to stream all my networked media, plus internet radio and Pandora and then feed it through the included 24/382 DAC, to my Halo JC2-BP preamp.

I read all the reviews of the OPPO, but could not bring myself to justify the upgrade over the Sony 790. Both did video very well, both did 4K upsampling etc.

Then OPPO came out with the firmware that allowed it to read DSD files from USB and that got my attention.

Now I had the possibility to replace the Cambridge Audio Media streamer AND the Sony 790 with a single box, which might do more than the other two combined AND do it all better!!

As soon as the OPPO took its place in my system, I knew I'd made the right choice. The Sony is in the bedroom and the Cambridge Audio is up for sale. The last thing I needed from OPPO, was a good Ipad app, so I could control the player and browse my music files without having to turn on my TV. That app just came out and the firmware to support it will go on my Oppo tonight.

So back to the 'standard' review topics:
1) Features-Does it provide 3D and/or streaming capabilities? Which features are useful and which are not? It does 3D (although I do not care about that feature) and its streaming capabilities are superb. I can stream 24/192 FLAC files without problem and they sound glorious.

2) Setup-How did you connect it to your system, directly to the display or to an AVR or pre/pro? How easy is it to set the correct aspect ratio?
I connected the OPPO in multiple ways: HDMI1 to an AVR (for Cable TV / Blu Ray viewing), HDMI2 to the TV, just to view music data on display and XLR analog out to my Halo JC2-BP preamp for the purest audio listening, Aspect ratio is not even a topic when you use HDMI.

3) User Interface-Are the remote and menu system well designed? Are they easy or difficult to use?
The remote is DECENT and some of the buttons that matter to me, take some finding or getting used to. The user interface is well designed and easy to navigate on screen,

4) Performance-How quickly does the player boot up, how quickly do Blu-rays load and start to play, how good does the image look, how good does the audio sound, how well does it upscale DVDs? Cite examples from content you've watched.
The player boots up very quickly, compared to anything else I've owned. Discs load quickly and start to play as fast as some DVD players from the past. Video looks better than any player I've ever used before (including the Sony 790). That includes files from hard drive. I watched a video file in 720p with DTS sound and it looked and sounded fantastic. Now I will make the time to revisit some old Blu Ray friends in 1080p and Dolby Digital HD shortly.

I could not be happier with this player, especially after the two recent add-ons: 1. DSD file playback and 2. A decent Ipad control app (to be tested).

For the curious, my system:

Source: OPPO BDP-105
Stereo preamp: Parasound Halo JC2-BP
AVR: Pioneer VSX-1121
Stereo Power amp: Bel Canto REF1000M monoblocks
Stereo speakers: Thiel CS7
Surround speakers: Swans 3.2
Cabling: XLR for stereo, HDMI elsewhere, mostly Kimber Cable (including speakers)

ProsCons
Great picture, great sound, well-built, feature-richNone, now the Ipad control app is out

Disc Player, Media Player, DAC and pre-amp: This deck does it all with top quality and style

review by styln

This is not just a Blu-ray player. If that is what you want, there are less costly options. It's not just a media player. If that is what you want, there are other products with fewer restrictions on content playback. This is not just a DAC. Here too, you can find a good stand-alone DAC for less. It is not just a line stage with a high-quality volume control. No, if you are looking for any one of those things, there are other options you can pursue. But what you cannot find is all of those products, combined into a single high-quality package that can function as the back-bone of your entertainment system. While it lacks more advanced features like room correction, it does provide basic audio processing. Overall, both the video and audio are world class. This means audiophile sound and videophile pictures. Every review out there backs this statement.

As one of the first owners, I've had the deck for about 9 months and use it almost daily. It has simplified my system and lets me enjoy the music, either 2 channel or multichannel, without being overly complicated. Because it is a DLNA render, it can be controlled from a phone or tablet. This makes it easy to access an entire digital library from the palm of your hand. Wonderful! Digital is now easy to use and looks and sounds incredible.

Look, this is a diverse product: it does so much more than just play Blu-rays. And there just isn't enough time or space to describe everything it does. Do yourself a favor. If you want a quality deck++, that holds it's resale value, you simply must audition this deck. I've built my system around it, saved considerable money, and could not be happier with the results.

06/19/13: I'm updating this review by:

a) Removing the "con" that the deck does not come it silver. It now does, and I own one.
b) Raising the score from 4.5 to 5.0

And I am raising the score, not because of any feature or finish color, but because I neglected to include what a great company Oppo is to do business with. While changing from black to silver is more of a lateral than an upgrade, it's the kind of thing that happens again and again with this company. With the BDP-83, Oppo offered an enhanced DAC audio upgrade. Later, out of the blue, they added very respectable networking support. These upgrades, some at very reasonable additional cost, most for free in firmware upgrades, extended the useful life of that deck. When they released the BDP-95, it incorporated many high-end features users were recommending. With the BDP-105, owners are benefiting again with an ever growing list of codec and format support, and (finally) offering a silver option. This is a small but growing company that really listens to it's customers and treats them... well it treats them like valued customers!

ProsCons
It is a top quality digital control center. It plays every disc format, codec, file format, stream. Easily controlled from your phone or tablet.Variable volume control level is set to 100% after FW upgrade which could lead to a damaged audio system.
