Panasonic TC-P65ST60 65-Inch 3D Smart Plasma HDTV

Pros: The overall picture is great. Cinema picture mode out of the box looks perfect to me.

Cons: The IP control for this TV is lacking. No wake-on-LAN and no apparent discrete input selections.

Upon getting the TV unpacked and setup I was really impressed with the picture. The only thing I have done is change the picture mode to Cinema and adjusted the motion smoother setting to weak. I may get a professional calibration one of these days but since the picture looks so good at the moment I am in no hurry to do so. I have had the TV for 2 months now and I am still very happy with it. The colors look very good to my untrained eye and I do not notice any exaggerated tint towards blue, green or red. The black levels are great and you can see a good level of shadow detail in dark scenes. The room where the TV is located has a window on the north wall and I have never had an issue with the picture appearing faded or washed out during the day. If you had a lot of light coming in from the west then it might not be bright enough for some people but nothing window coverings could not remedy. I also have not noticed a lot of reflection when viewing any content during the day.

It has a lot of "smart" features which I don't use mainly because I have most of the popular features plus some on my Blu-ray player. The navigation to get to and operate the apps is okay but nothing exceptional to me. I tried out a couple of the apps just for fun but have not used them since. It also has a good number of picture and color settings to fine tune to your liking. The guy that installed my speakers in the room is also an ISF Level II certified calibrator and he said he loves calibrating these TVs because the end result is so good.

I have watched Blu-ray, DVD, satellite and over-the-air sources and all looked good except one of the DVD sources thus far. The DVD source was not bad but it was not what I was expecting. It looked a little grainy and this could of just been the age of the disk since it was about 15 years old. All the 1080p Blu-ray sources were really clean. All Blu-ray and DVD discs were played through an Oppo BDP-103 with HDMI 1 connected directly to HDMI 3 on the TV. With the 1080p sources all I could say was WOW! The satellite source looked really good for the most part. Even though a channel may be designated as HD some of the content was not originally HD and up converted but still looked acceptable to me.

I also tend to watch a lot of news and financial channels where you have banners and tickers across the bottom of the screen. I have never noticed any image retention although I'm not really trying to find any. Several owners have reported image retention and most say it disappears after switching sources for a while. If it is not obvious to me under normal viewing then I think this is not an issue for me. I have another Panasonic plasma that is 6 years old and you will notice some minor image retention when the TV is turned off but it disappears later. I have not noticed this behavior on the ST60 at all so far.

I mentioned the IP control as a con because I use an iOS device for my remote control and I had to use IR to get the level of control I wanted. If the IP control would have been more complete I could have eliminated running a blaster up to the TV and had a cleaner setup. I think this is not the case with the VT60 and ZT60 models but for the difference in cost I can live with IR control.

I have not watched any 3D sources yet but did try out the 2D-to-3D conversion watching a movie on a satellite channel. It appears to work but I am not a big 3D fan to begin with. As another reviewer mentioned the 3D glasses are light weight and pretty much fit over prescription glasses but I am not saying it was comfortable. This is one reason I am not a big 3D fan.

The general appearance of the TV is very sleek with a thin stainless steel rim around the edge of the panel and the panel itself is thin especially for a plasma. The base on the ST60 is glossy black plastic which looks good and pretty much vanishes in a dark room. Be very careful cleaning the base as it will scratch easily. I wiped of some dust with a soft towel using very light pressure and got some minor scratches that can be seen if the light hits it just right. From now on I use a very fine micro fiber cloth designed for cleaning the display glass.

In summary I think this is an excellent TV especially for the price but would have rather had better IP control in lieu of all the smart features.

Pros: Excellent resolution-deep blacks-rich colors-plenty of brightness

Cons: Only that I am having to baby this tv because of fear of image retention but that is just my choice. I am being overly cautious but that is just me.

This is my first plasma having come from a Sony LCD, LCOS and CRT hdtv. I can say without a doubt that this is the best looking hdtv I have ever owned. I thought my LCD looked great but this tv is a definite step-up in performance for sure. I have had the set for about 5 weeks now, and I am amazed at the picture quality that Panasonic produces with this current line of plasma tvs. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about with the picture quality of plasmas and I have not been disappointed so far.

Features: The ST60 has plenty of features such as online streaming, but so far I have not used this capability because I use things like Netflix from my Oppo bluray player. There are also a good number of apps on your home screen, but I have not explored these as well. My main interest is picture quality with blurays whether it be 2D or 3D. 3D is something that I have never had on a hdtv and I am very pleased with the picture qualtiy of the few 3D titles I have explored. I have watched Tangled, The Lion King, Finding Nemo and Avatar in 3D. These all provide good depth with plenty of brightness.

Please note that I did a software update on the ST60 and I have not had any motion issues with 3D that were previously reported in some online professional reviews. The 3D glasses fit well over my prescription glasses and they are fairly light which provides good overall comfort.

Setup: The ST60 was not difficult at all to setup. It does have a setup wizard which was quite easy to use when you followed the prompts. I ran a series of break-in slides from D-Nice for the first 100hrs, and I then used Spears and Munsil's HD Benchmark disc to set the basic user controls such as contrast, brightness and color. I ended up using D-Nice's recommended settings but that was a matter of personal taste for me.

User Interface: The menu system is quite easy to use and it is laid out very well so you can go into things like pictures settings, sound settings with many adjustments available.

Performance: This is the most important thing to me when it comes to how I would judge an hdtv. The level of detail in whatever source I was using was very satisfying. Blacks are truly black and the colors are quite accurate. The level of detail in the picture was very good as well. Pixar bluray movies such as Toy Story and Finding Nemo are good examples of movies that showcase the outstanding performance of the ST60.

Highly recommended.
