Sony UBP-X800 Ultra HD Blu-ray and Universal Disc Player

The Sony UBP-X800 is the company’s first mass-market, consumer, retail 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. It’s priced at a quite affordable $300 when you consider its capabilities as a universal disc player (UDP). This new machine is now available to preorder from Amazon and Best Buy and other retailers and will become ship in March of this year.

Sony’s UBP-X800 is more than just a UHD Blu-ray player. Fans of high-res audio will be happy to know it can play Super Audio CD and decode 24-bit / 192 kHz PCM as well as 11.2 MHz DSD (with a future firmware update). Of course, you’ll also be able to┬áplay standard Blu-rays, but also Blu-ray 3D and BD-ROM. Plus, it handles DVDs and DVD audio. Oh, and it plays standard CDs as well.

This is a very versatile player in terms of format support. For video, it can handle the following: AVCHD disc format, Motion JPEG (.mov, .avi), MPEG-1 Video/PS (.mpg, .MPEG, .mkv).VOB, .VRO, MPEG-2 Video/PS, TS (.mpg, .MPEG, .m2ts, .mts, .mkv).VOB, .VRO, MPEG-4/AVC (.mov, 3gp, .3g2, .3gpp, .3gpp2, .flv), MPEG-4 AVC (.mkv, .mp4, .m4v, .m2ts, .mts), VC1 (.m2ts, .mts, .mkv), WMV9 (.wmv, .asf, .mkv), and Xvid (.avi, .mkv).

The players equally adept at handling audio files. In addition to handling 7.1-channel DTS, DTS:X, Dolby True HD plus Atmos, it is compatible with AAC (.AAC, .mka), AIFF (.aiff, .aif), ALAC (.m4a), Dolby Digital (.ac3, .mka), DSD – DSDIFF/DSD (.dff, .dsf), FLAC (.flac, .fla), HEAAC v.1/v.2/level2, LP cm (.mka), Vorbis, WMA10 Pro, and WMA9 Standard (.WMA),

Of course, a primary purpose of the 8-pound, 7-ounce UBP-X800 is to play back UHD Blu-rays. In case you’re not equipped with a HDR-capable TV, this player offers HDR to SDR conversion.

This connected player offers Wi-Fi in both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz flavors. It’s capable of streaming 3D as well as 4K video. As far as connectivity goes, it offers dual HDMI outputs as well as a coaxial digital audio output and an Ethernet connection. Plus, it features a USB input on the front panel. The Sony UBP-X800 plays nice with Sony’s SongPal multiroom networked audio system.

Sony may have taken it’s time to introduce its first mass-market ultra HD Blu-ray player, but given its feature set in price point, the UBP-X800 looks like it’s destined to be the centerpiece of many AV systems.
