VPL-VW385ES with AVS Forum Best of CEDIA 2017 Award

At CEDIA today, Sony announced two new 4K HDR-capable projectors: the entry-level Sony VPL-VW285ES and mid-level VPL-VW385ES. Both offer true 4K (4096×2160) resolution and HDR capabilities with HDMI inputs that operate at 13.5 Gbps, which allows them to reproduce video at 60 fps with 10-bit color. This makes both models ideal for high frame-rate movies and gaming.

The Sony VPL-VW285ES is aimed squarely at those taking their first step into home projectors. Its Triluminos technology displays is said to reproduce a much broader range of colors as well as more tones and textures. In addition, the lamp is rated for up to 6000 hours, reducing maintenance costs.

Stepping up to the VPL-VW385ES, its Advanced Iris provides a dynamic contrast ratio of 200,000:1. It also provides lens memories that store focus, zoom, lens-shift and blanking settings for different aspect ratios.

Sony Electronics COO Mike Fasulo introduced the VPL-VW285ES at CEDIA 2017.

“Sony’s newest line-up of true 4K HDR home theater projectors delivers the engagement experience for cinema-viewers and gamers of all genres,” says Mike Fasulo, Sony Electronics President and COO. “The new projector line provides an entry-level for those seeking to elevate their viewing experience to true 4K with the VW285ES or reach further into image perfection with the VW385ES home-theater projector experience.”

The company also announced some significant updates to the VPL-VW675ES, which are available for new and existing owners. The update includes support for Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) HDR with auto-detection of supported HDR formats. Also, the Information Menu now provides additional details about the color and HDR format of incoming signals. Finally, an improved lens offers even better focus and stability than before. (The new lens will not be available to current owners.) These features are common to all the new projectors announced at CEDIA 2017.

In related news, Sony announced a partnership with Kaleidescape, which makes the Strato 4K/UHD HDR movie server. Customers who purchase a qualifying Sony 4K projector (VPL-VW285ES, VW365ES, VW385ES, VW675ES, VW885ES, VZ1000ES, or VW5000ES) between September 1, 2017, and March 31, 2018, will receive a bundle of 10 4K HDR movies from the Kaleidescape Movie Store, valued at up to $350, at no additional charge. This offer also applies to current owners of a qualifying Sony projector who purchase a Kaleidescape Strato system by March 31, 2018.

According to Mike Fasulo, President and COO of Sony Electronics, “This joint promotion with Kaleidescape underscores our unwavering commitment to provide the finest in 4K HDR entertainment. Thanks to efforts like these, we’re confident that the overall market for 4K content will continue to grow across the industry.”
