Chapter 2 of Sony’s extensive white paper about the VPL-VW5000ES focuses on resolution and color. Most so-called 4K projectors are not true 4K (4096×2160), but rather 3840×2160. Even worse, most have only 1920×1080 actual pixels that are quickly alternated between two positions to simulate 4K, a process often called “faux-K.” By contrast, the VPL-VW5000ES and several other models from Sony are true 4K, just like commercial cinemas. This chapter also includes a detailed discussion of seating distance as it relates to resolution. In addition, it provides an explanation of the advantages offered by separate imaging chips for red, green, and blue compared with single-chip DLP projection.
