Sony is one of the only companies that offer true 4K projectors for home theaters. At CEDIA today, several new models were added to its lineup, including the Sony VPL-VW885ES. This high-end beauty offers true 4K (4096×2160) resolution and high dynamic-range (HDR) capability. Its laser-phosphor light engine is spec’d to output 2000 lumens with a lifetime of 20,000 hours, and it can be modulated in real time to provide essentially infinite dynamic contrast.
Two HDMI inputs support a bitrate of 18 Gbps and HDCP 2.2, allowing the projector to display 4K/UHD HDR content at the highest available frame rates and bit depths. Also, lens memories store settings for zoom, focus, and lens shift for different aspect ratios. Alternatively, the projector can be used with an anamorphic lens thanks to its vertical-stretch processing.
Speaking of processing, the VPL-VW885ES includes Sony’s Reality Creation, which is said to provide crisper picture quality and enhanced detail without enhanced noise. Also available is Motionflow frame interpolation that now sharpens motion detail in 4K and HD images.
Sony Electronics COO Mike Fasulo introduces the VPL-VW885ES.
In related news, Sony announced a partnership with Kaleidescape, which makes the Strato 4K/UHD HDR movie server. Customers who purchase a qualifying Sony 4K projector (VPL-VW285ES, VW365ES, VW385ES, VW675ES, VW885ES, VZ1000ES, and VW5000ES) between September 1, 2017, and March 31, 2018, will receive a bundle of 10 4K HDR movies from the Kaleidescape Movie Store, valued at up to $350, at no additional charge. This offer also applies to current owners of a qualifying Sony projector who purchase a Kaleidescape Strato system by March 31, 2018.
According to Mike Fasulo, President and COO of Sony Electronics, “This joint promotion with Kaleidescape underscores our unwavering commitment to provide the finest in 4K HDR entertainment. Thanks to efforts like these, we’re confident that the overall market for 4K content will continue to grow across the industry.”
“Sony is committed to creating the highest quality projectors,” says Cheena Srinivasan, Founder and CEO of Kaleidescape. “Sony projectors, with their true 4K HDR picture quality, are the best home projectors for viewing movies from a Kaleidescape 4K player because the player provides true HDR BD quality, and the Sony projectors can put all that quality onto the screen.”
The Sony VPL-VW885ES will start shipping in late November, 2017, at a price of $25,000. That ain’t chicken feed, but you get a whole lot for the money.
