For what it's worth I talked to Sony Support tonight via chat and Jessica told me that the current release date for the BDP-S550 is Oct 1, 2008 at 12:00 AM.

Thanks for the info.
Crap, I don't know if I can wait until 10/1...

Yesterday I went to the Sony Style store here in Boca Raton, Florida. After seeing, hearing and comparing I purchased the S350. For my needs this model was perfect. The set up was easy. the load time was fast. The picture increadible. Last night I watched "Cars". Increadible clarity and sound. I combined the S350 with the SS2000 home theater. I used HDMI for the entire system connections. I love movies with sound effects. Recommendations?

Replace that SS2000 with real HT gear.

I talked to Abt in an online chat. They said they won't get a new shipment until Wed/Thurs and will ship when they arrive.

Here's an idea. Replace it for him if his choice of sound system is such an affront to your obviously very high-brow sensibilities. No? I didn't think so. Does the guy deserve this kind of response to friendly question?

Not high-brow at all, merely offering a suggestion as to how he can benefit if he is in fact someone that loves movies and sound effects. I wasn't sure exactly what he was looking for, so was merely pointing out that you CANNOT get anything close to a HT experience with a sub $300 speaker, sub, receiver combo. Unfortunately, due to shady marketing practices, most consumers don't realize this.

Thank you slim, in re-reading the post, I can see that now. And while I still think my suggestion is pertinent and will be beneficial, I'll switch tracks and point the member to these links regarding movies:

It seems with the S350 released and the Owner's thread growing quickly, the majority of conversation here could probably focus mainly on the S550's release.

Any updates on when we can expect to see the S550, or even the Owner's Manual?

I asked that question a couple of days ago and was told the expected release date is 10/1 which I found rather shocking.

I got fed up with ABT, so I canceled the order today. While I was canceling the order, the ABT person stated (via online chat) that they did not expect units for a little while longer. Don't know what that means???

Instead I called SonyStyle and ordered the S350 through them. They confirmed that the unit will ship early tomorrow. I should have it by the end of the week (fingers crossed). SonyStyle cost me $50 more than it cost at ABT, but I was tired of waiting.

I have very little patience for these types of things.

As of 9:20 EDT, it appears to be in stock at Amazon.

Can anyone tell me: what format of hard drive will work with the s350? Does it have to be FAT32? Would that limit the filesize?

I have home movies, 12GB HDV files, and I would like to play them from a USB hard drive. Am I out of luck?

Thanks.

I took a look at amazon, just to be clear that the
"it" you refer to is the S350 as opposed to the S550 that many of us are anxiously awaiting.

That's correct.

I doubt it would. I assume that it sony would think you would be using your receiver for those duties. Sony is not going to throw a featured preamp on its 7.1 outs. They figure you should be happy that you have analog outs to begin with. I am looking at this player too.

That's not true.

Because a lot of receivers/processors will NOT apply bass management or distance management to 5.1 analogue inputs, the player has to provide these capabilities. Fortunately mine does provide this...but it is a minority. The reason for this, is that in order to apply that kind of processing, the sound needs to be put back into the digital domain...i.e. an ADC process. This of course adds cost to the receivers/processors.

So far, most BD players have small/large speaker settings and distance parameters. When the speakers are set to small the crossover is usually fixed and varies from player to player (anything from 80Hz-120Hz I have seen).

Most have small/large but very few if any have distance

You can't use a USB hard drive, only USB flash drives (according to the owner's manual)

I should have cancelled my order from Abt a long time ago. Here's what they're still saying -

Thanks for contacting us. An operator will be with you shortly...

[William] Estimate on when an order will ship. Order ID: ***********. Currently backordered. Thanks.
[Neil K.] Welcome to Abt Live Chat.
[Neil K.] Let me look that up for you. Please hold a moment.
[Neil K.]
I apologize but that unit is still on order from Sony. According to them we should have them in our warehouse in about a week. As soon as we do we will ship them out and send you an e-mail with the tracking.
[William] Thanks for the update.
[Neil K.] Thanks for contacting Abt. It was a pleasure chatting with you.
[Neil K.] Have a nice day.

They've said this since July 7th.

I went ahead an cancelled from Abt. You can buy the S350 from Amazon here -
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-BDP-S350-...6242035&sr=8-1
(link doesn't work so just do a search)
I spent the extra money to get it by Friday so I'll let folks know how it works. I've heard of some account of movies having a yellow look to them so I'll see if this is the case. Anyone else seen this?

I ordered my s350 yesterday and the confiration had an estimated ship date of 7/16. Now my order shows a ship date of 7/19. They say they can't cancel the order now. because "it is too far into the process" and they have now clue when or where it will ship.

Don't worry - I'll ship the next day. When I ordered back on 7/9 it said it was to ship on 7/10 but then after I placed my order it said "estimated ship date 7/19." Turned out it shipped on the 10th. Lot of people experiencing the same thing.

I was considering buying the BDP-S350 from Best Buy for easy return. As it is not even showing on their website as a "Preorder", I thought I would stop by the Pleasant Hill, CA store on the way home this evening and if they had any access to updated information.

When I entered the area there was no salespeople to be found anywhere. I looked all over for a few minutes and one of the "tie clad" salespeople from the Magnolia area arrived and I asked: "When will you have the new Sony BDP-S350 in stock?" He spent about three minutes searching on the computer never interacting with me. After a while, I noticed he was searching Google for "BDP-S350 at best buy. I said I can search the internet, I was hoping you had some internal information. He said he didn't and the product not even on their website yet (which I already knew). He then asked another Magnolia salesperson about the availability and he said while walking away from us "in the summer". The guy "helping" me responded "but it is the summer" to his departing coworker. At that point I said "I'll order the product from Amazon" and left the store.

I need a little help understanding the audio side of things. I have a Sony STR DG910 receiver with a 5.1 setup, and I was considering getting the BDP-S350, however it appears that I would not be able to hear DTS HD in all of its glory. Just to sum up, this is what I understand, can someone please confirm?

-The BDP-S350 will output all formats as bitstream, but my DG910 cannot accpet bitstream.

-The BDP-S350 will decode and output all but DTS HD to my DG910 as PCM.

-The PS3 would output all formats as PCM to my DG910

-The BDP-S550 would be able to output all formats as PCM, as well as bitstream (of course, bitstream won't do me any good).

Currently, I have a 350 on order, but may cancel it tomorrow and wait for the 550. I have a couple of questions though.

-Are the HD audio formats only applicable with a 7.1 system? I currently only have a 5.1 setup. Will I notice much of a difference with the HD audio formats?

-How big of a deal is DTS HD? Are some discs coded in DTS HD, while others are in TrueHD?

-If I were to upgrade my speakers to 7.1, how would my DG910 handle source audio of 5.1? Would it only use 5.1 since I don't think the 910 does any matrixing?

I was considering upgrading my reciever, but at this time, all I want is to be able to view 1080P content and hear the latest sound formats. I may consider a receiver upgrade in a year or so as well though. Now, I am leaning torward the BDP-S550, although I may begin to research the PS3 becasue I am tired of waiting.

Thanks.

Hi there,

Can someone clarify for me that S550 will indeed both stream and decode internally DTS-HD Master Audio and DolbyTrue HD or did I get this
wrong ?

The reason I am asking about that is that currently I have Samsung 1400 that bitstreams DTS-HD Master Audio and DolbyTrue HD signals to Denon AVR-988 receiver. This is working very well and all the logos light up on the Denon front panel. However, I am wondering if I gain any new (or better) functionality with the new Sony S550 or will it be the same as my current method. Also, if S550 only decodes internally DTS-HD Master Audio and DolbyTrue HD (not via bitstream) would I not loose the logo display on Denon and instead I would only see MPCM ?

I am trying to justify the extra cost of the new BD player and see if there are any advantages especially if new Sony BD players use the same chipset as Samsung 1400. Please provide your honest opinions

Thanks,
Nikonowski

The new formats are about the quality of audio, not the number of channels. You can get 7.1 with them, but very few discs actually have 7.1 tracks because movies are usually mixed in 5.1 for theatrical release.

There are three choices for losselss - dts-MA, TrueHD, and uncompressed PCM. They should all sound the same. But, since studios have their own reasons for the formats they choose, you need the ability to get all three.

Your AVR doesn't have PLIIx, DTS Neo:6, or DD-EX? If not, you'd be limited to 5.1, I guess.

The PS3 looks like it would meet your needs every bit as much as an S550. The PS3 gets great reviews.
