Urga,

Were those pictures taken with your 42PX80E using the 100 Hz scan rate? Also, what camera settings did you use?

What upscaler are you using for your SD content?

Thanks,
Larry

I've had the pleasure of owning a 50px80 now 3 weeks - absolutely love the thing. No IR issues buzzing green blobs missing pixels etc. etc. that seem to be concerning most people looking into this model. I made my choice after many weeks research and props to this forum as it solidified my choice for this plasma.

I'm now at the point where I am wanting to crank up and tweak my settings. I've applied Larrys and several others. I have several questions - 1. it appears most of the settings are based on the 42" panel.. as I have the 50" should there be any appreciable difference using these settings? 2. What format are people using for normal tv viewing, I've left it on FULL and not quite sure if it is the appropriate setting... had a crt before and didn't like much the stretched look.

Again I have appreciated all the input here it's been extremelly helpful.

I own a 50 as well. I use Larry's settings as a baseline and then "tweak" it to where I think it looks good to me. That's all that counts as most people here will attest. For SD programming I use "Just". That can look a little stretched at times but I've gotten used to it. Obviously I use "Full" for HD programming. I've passed the so-called "break-in" period that many are nervous about. I used "Zoom" on letterbox programming until I had about a week's worth of on-time watching this tv.

Yeah I don't have that on my TV...I think my camera and its long shutter time setting I have it on caused it. I actually thought my colors were too pale in real world viewing.

I picked up the 50 yesterday and got it set up last night. I'm a happy guy! It will take a while to tweak but it looks gorgeous. My seating distance is 9.5-11 feet depending on leaning forward or not; no screen door, just glorious detail. Thanks for all the info, it made my choice much more well informed and less risky. I'll report back on settings and probably with questions. Thanks, again, everyone!

Nope, no break in...been gaming/tv watching straight out of the box after a calibration. The picture looks great...much better than my Sharp LCD I had previously. If its true it'll improve after 100 hours, well thats awesome as well. I'll tweak the settings as I see fit.

The blacks look great...I have 0 black crush currently and games/movies look even better than before.

The game is Dark Sector...I just rented it today to tide me over until GTA.

haha, i want to get the 42in 720p panny. Everyone just scares me with the break in thing. I have a 26 in. magnavox lcd and it is terrible to play COD4 on. Any suggestions?
since the new maps came out this weekend, i've probly played COD4 on ps3 about 15 hours. It was pretty much 3 4-5 hour sessions and a little bit in between. i didn't really do too much to prevent the IR, and I do notice a tiny bit (only in the bottom left). I'm just going to leave my tv on for awhile on some tv station to make sure that it goes away. i'm at 275 hours now with the tv too

(really dark scene...my camera automatically kept the shutter open longer.

You know I would buy this set if it weren't for the insanely ugly stand.

Once you look at the picture the cosmetics go out the window. You will forget about the cosmetics after awhile. If you think the PX80 series is ugly, you should go back in the past and think about the PX60U series. Nice and silver! I think you would enjoy this...LOL! I have had my 42PX60U for nearly 2 years and I find it okay and don't recognize it anymore...

I guess that's why taking pictures of pictures doesn't really tell anything. Then they get viewed on a computer screen.

Yeah, people need to not ever judge tv quality soley based on pics...that are viewed then on a different monitor...go in store (even thats not the best but its the best you can do).

Hello fellow PX80 Owners -

I've read the tech note posted on the sticky conversion thread, but I'm still somewhat confused and wanted some clarification.

If I've read the original post correctly, even though the PX80 has a native display resolution of 720p, it will always scale the image to 1080p and then drop it to 768 for the actual display.

For SD DVD watching then, if I don't want the Panny to handle any scaling than I need to feed it a direct 1080p signal? Does that make sense? I'm really trying to avoid any double-scaling or re-scaling of the source if possible and have the upconverting DVD player do the work here. I have an Oppo 980H that can output both 1080p and 720p. Should I have it set to 1080p then, eventhough the 720p signal would technically be the PX80 native display?

I still plan to do some A/B comparisions here, just want to better understand what was going on behind the scenes. Please let me know if I've missed something completey.

Thanks.

I have a th-42px80u, when I play my PS3 (hdmi cable) for an hour or so, If I shut the tv off and come back to watch TV it won't come on. The guys changed the hdmi board. TV was working good until my stepson played the ps3 again, shut the tv off came back about 4hrs later, the tv wouldn't come on, red lite blinkes 10 times. The tv repair man is coming to get it as soon as panny techs talk with him about what it is doing. Has anyone else had a problem like this, only when you play games, movies are alright every thing works fine.
is the PS3 outputting 1080p? because the 42px80u is a 720p/1080i set, and 1080p would cause black screen and an error. just a thought.
My 50PX80U made it through both days of the NFL draft on Espn (at least 12 hours). Heavy duty still images on Espn at the sides. Some IR but it went quickly away. If it make it through that it can make it through anything!!
I don't know I will check, but I had to unplug the tv for about a minute the first time it happened, and 2 more time the next time it happened.

Noodles,

For a 1080P input, the Panasonic converts to 768P. For anything other than 1080P, the Panasonic upscales to 1080P and then converts to 786P. There is no other reason for this other than that is how Panasonic decided to do it. 786 x 1356 is the native screen size for the 50PX80U and 768 x 1024 is the native screen size for the 42PX80U.

You shut the tv off while the PS3 is still on; or you play PS3, turn the PS3 off, turn the tv off, and then it won't turn on later? I have played long sessions on my PS3, turned it & the tv off and come back to watch tv later with no trouble.

Thanks for the quick reply Larry.

I guess for my purposes then setting the Oppo to 1080p is technically the least amount of work/scaling for the Panasonic Display.
