If space is really an issue, you might consider a sound bar, but those are pricey (unless on clearance), and are still somewhat bulky and unsightly.
That said, I currently only use the television speakers when watching OTA TV on my PX80 (I normally would output TV audio to my AVR, but I have no optical toslink connections left.) I have no complaints about the sound quality. Nothing to gush over, but nothing bad. Then again, I'm not cranking up the volume when I watch television.
Good point. I agree that it wouldn't be worth $1000 just to get the speakers, but I thought... if there was a model with similar specs to the PX80, with the sound of the 700u, then I woulld be willing to spend a bit more to get the improved sound quality.
I ordered my new TH-50PX80, so am pretty excited about that. My next goal is to keep the system as clean and free of dangling wires as possible. The idea of built-in speakers always sat well with me, but if there is a good compact simple speakersystem that would really improve my sound quality, and won't look 'unsightly' in our livingroom, then I would be very interested. I don't know where to start that search though.
My current system is going to be fairly simple... just the 50PX80, a SD cable signal cord, and an AppleTV connected through HDMI.
Anyway, it has been awesome to be able to use these forums to learn more about HDTV. I really appreciate the input I've gotten from these forums! What a great learning experience.
