Wrong. The px80 has 24p playback at 96 hz, so it is real 24p without any judder.

Real Cinema is identical with the Kuro's 24p system, wich can take PAL material and converte to true 24p.

I am new to plasma's. Just bought a panny th-42px80u and so far I love it.

My question is, for 4:3 viewing is it best to have the side bars black or grey?

Thanks.

If worried about burn in....I was told it is better to have the side bars grey. Anyone here feel free to correct me.

Burn-in is something of the past now

The other option would be to use Just mode to stretch the picture to fit the TV. Some people find the distortion irritating. Others don't mind. It would probably be a good idea to do this at least for the first 100 hours or so of viewing.

I have always stretched the picture even on my Sony lcd projection. I owned a 53" Pioneer set which had an incredible stretch mode.

Has anyone done a side by side comparison of a calibrated 75 and a calibrated 80?

So they put 24p in the entry model but not in the PZ80 or the PZ85, then they put low Hz playback in the top of line 800 and 850 (48Hz)? That seems weird.

Do you have a source for this information?

Also, are you in Europe? I see you mention PAL.

I briefly saw a PX80U today and my quick impression is that it's just about as reflective as my PZ700U and the other TVs on the wall (maybe a little less so), so it appears that the new Anti-Reflective Filter is slightly less reflective than the 2007 models, and nowhere near as non-reflective as the Anti-Glare filter used on the PZ77U. I could see the whole bank of storefront windows reflected in the screen, pretty much like all the other plasmas on the wall (with the exception of the PZ77U). That's fine with me since i do not like the AG screen on the PZ77U.

Were you able to assess your opinion on the PX80U vs. your 700U or others around and any thoughts you can share regarding pq?

Yeah, can you document that somehow? Everything seen here in the States seems to indicate differently.

No way. PX80 / PZ80 / PZ85 are not 24p native capable, only 3:2 pulldown.

Only PZ800 / PZ850 can refresh at a multiple of 24Hz.

Just picked up my 50px80u over the weekend and have been more or less happy with the look. As a hd newbie I don't quite know all the ins and outs of calibration, etc. Anybody have a list of settings they want to share? I have it set to Cinema right now.

Also any audio settings? I found some bass distortion with certain commercials, but that seems to me to be more a function of the production and not the tv-- but still annoying.

Thanks
Doug-there's a ton of postings with people's calibration numbers on the main 70 series thread here. On the issue of audio, why not treat that great new plasma to a 5.1 or better surround system? When I upgrade to the 50" in early April I'll never hear the speakers from the tv just as I have them turned off on my current hdtv.

Any hands on impression of the PX80? I know some people already own it. I want to know how good it is.

Try to stay away from watching it with the sidebars as much as you can. When you are watching it have it on gray for the sidebars or if you can stand to watch it in stretch mode do so. Please update on your experiences with your new set and if you can post pictures please do.

This still seems not to have been explained yet. It's all in the documentation.

From page 23 of the 42px80u manual:

"Change the brightness of the sidebar (Off/Dark/Mid/Bright)(4:3 mode only) The recommended setting is Bright to prevent panel Image retention. (p. 43)"

From page 43 of the 42px80u manual:

"Do not display a picture in 4:3 mode for an extended period, as this can cause "Image retention" to remain on either or both sides of the display field. To reduce the risk of such Image retention, change the brightness of the side bars. See pages 24-25 for more information. The side bar may flash (alternate black/white) depending on the picture. Using Cinema mode will reduce such flashing (See below).

Scrolling Bar ---- To prevent Image retention, scrolls white vertical bar from left to right on a black screen. Press any key except the POWER key to return to previous screen. You will return to previous screen if any key operation has not been performed for 15 minutes. See pages 24-25 for more information."

Hope this helps,
Larry

When all else fails read the manual I guess. Good call I am glad they put that kind of info in manuals now.

1st off, I have to tell you guys I'm completely new to plasma tv's. I replaced a sony kdl-40xbr1. There was nothing wrong with the sony, just wanted to have a less bulky display, better picture, and more hdmi inputs.

I absolutely love this TV. It has really good blacks. I saw it at BB next to the Pioneer Kuro. I have to admit the Pioneer had better blacks, and overall a better picture, but my personal opinion not by much(at least not $500-600 better).

The black piano finish is amazing. I like how it has a very slim bezel around the screen, gives it a sharp look. The internal speakers are amazing as well.

I'm still messing with the picture settings. I will take some pictures tonight and post them.

I think this is an incredible value for what you're getting, panasonic plasma, 3 hdmi inputs, sd card reader, great speakers.

We have it setup in the living room, mainly watch TV on it. sit about 10 ft away from the display. Love it

I know this isn't going to help you guys much, but I will keep you updated.

Thanks

Whoops! must have missed that part of the manual. I'm usually good with reading instruction manuals.

Thanks Larry

You're welcome. It's easy to miss stuff in transliterated manuals.
